Rollin' Down The Blogroll

Kinks reference here..."You Really Got Me."

Dave at classicrock.about.com wrote about our favorite subject, classic rock. What a cool idea to review our friends online, read their blogs and find out what the real buzz on the street is. Thanks, Dave!

So I'll call this...Rollin' Down The Blogroll...

One of our favorite weblogs is Electric Guitar Review...Cary just reviewed thirty days of signature guitars, giving us a close-up look at the gear some of our favorite bands are playing and what we are hearing on record.

The Hits Just Keep On Comin' flashed back to 1966 and named alot of our favorite classic rock songs from radio forty years ago. When WKNR in Detroit was the TOP Top 40 station in the market, and developing regional hits in their Top 10 playlist with The Rationals paying "Respect" to Otis Redding. Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records was inspired by their cover version and persuaded Aretha Franklin to record it a year later.

66' was also the year Eric Clapton played in John Mayall's Blues Breakers and then made "Fresh Cream." Jimi Hendrix Experienced "Hey Joe," The Beatles were "Nowhere Man," the Rolling Stones had their "19th Nervous Breakdown," and the Monkees took the "Last Train To Clarksville."

Jeff at Imagine Echoes provides an extreme close up concert review of The Who at the Virgin Music Festival. Standing twenty feet from the stage, he was close enough to watch Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend rock out to their classics for over an hour, and even got to hear a few songs from their new album.

Earvolution.com clued me in this week about the first ever Robert Plant music DVD to be released on October 24th, which will include classic Led Zeppelin tunes, and Plant's solo material. I've always liked the middle eastern flavor on some of his songs, especially when he teamed up with Jimmy Page years ago. The Eastern influence was felt back as far as 1975 when Zeppelin recorded their Kashmir album.

And Layla's Classic Rock Faves highlight the new Peter Frampton album and brings us full circle by linking back to Dave's review of Fingerprints at classicrock.about.com. Frampton teams up with an awesome guest list of musicians on his new album including the Stones' Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman; Pearl Jam’s Matt Cameron and Mike McCready; original members of The Shadows, Hank Marvin and Brian Bennett; and Warren Haynes from the Allman Brothers Band.

Devil's Got A New Disguise: The Very Best Of Aerosmith.

Just what we needed. Another "single-disc greatest hits compilation." However, this one's all good. This rock collection has some of the great early hits that Aerosmith had on Columbia Records...

Back In The Saddle
Sweet Emotion
Walk This Way
Dream On
Last Child

One of the things I love about Aerosmith is their staying power. Even after jumping labels onto Geffen Records, they continued to crank out the jams like "Love In An Elevator" and "Janie's Got A Gun."

Plus they've recorded two new songs, "Devil's Got A New Disguise" [RealPlayer : WinMedia] and "Sedona Sunrise," [RealPlayer : WinMedia] which are included on this album. That brings the album's total tracks up to 18. A pretty good bargain, considering the fact there doesn't seem to be any filler or throwaway tunes here.

Available October 17th on Columbia Records & Legacy Recordings.

Sony's giving away a free download of the band's new track "Devil's Got A New Disguise" if you pre-order the new album from their website. Too bad it's only available in WindowsMediaAudio .wma format.

There's also a special release coming in November..."You Gotta Move," Aerosmith's first live concert DVD, that captures their last concert tour, supporting their blues/roots album "Honkin On Bobo." Originally filmed for a two hour A&E special, the footage has been expanded into DVD format, complete with ass kickin' Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. The package will also come with a six song audio CD.

YouTube partners with Warner Music Group

Finally the music labels are getting wise to the current state-of-online-affairs. Warner Music Group has entered into a new partnership with the online video sharing site YouTube, to allow legal distribution of their music videos. Not only will they distribute music videos, but also behind-the-scenes footage, artist interviews and original programming.

This is a great move for many reasons, but mostly because consumers get legally downloaded content, and both the label and the online host will share advertising revenue. This is YouTube's first commercial partnership for legal video distribution. Last month they announced an advertising deal with Warners to promote the new Paris Hilton album via their new Brand Channel.

The Reuters news story also reported that both companies said YouTube users would be able to incorporate music from Warner's catalog into their videos. I applaud this bold move by one of the top five music labels for being the first to step forward with their precious (and deep) content, and hooking up with a major online player like YouTube.

Warner Music executive Alex Zubillaga said "We're trying to lead through innovation as opposed to litigation."

Bravo! Let's drop the lawsuits and focus on creative ways to allow consumers access to online music, video and other interactive content. With the right system, we can all benefit; you, me, the suits, and of course, the artists themselves.

US vs. John Lennon Soundtrack

Dave at ClassicRock.about.com wrote a great review of the new soundtrack album to the highly-anticipated feature length documentary film, The U.S. vs. John Lennon.

The Soundtrack Album:

Contains 21 tracks, available on CD and digital download on September 26th from Capitol/EMI Music. The CD and digital album include liner notes written exclusively by Yoko Ono Lennon.

Featuring:
  • “Imagine"
  • “Nobody Told Me”
  • “Instant Karma (We All Shine On)”
  • “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”
  • “Power To The People”

Two Previously Unreleased Tracks:
  • "Attica State” (recorded live at 1971’s “John Sinclair Freedom Rally” benefit concert in Ann Arbor, Michigan)
  • "How Do You Sleep” (instrumental version from the film)

“Give Peace A Chance” Audio: WinMedia LO : HI : QuickTime

“I Don’t Wanna Be A Soldier” Audio: WinMedia LO : HI : QuickTime

The Film:
Through its captivating exploration of the government’s ongoing efforts to silence John Lennon, this documentary clearly illustrates certain parallels to today’s political landscape, through insightful interviews with those who knew him best. Now playing in New York and Los Angeles; national release at the end of September. Amazon.com has a movie trailer on their site.

The History:
The U.S. vs. John Lennon follows Lennon’s artistic and personal evolution between 1966 and 1976 as he broadened his personal and artistic scope, from his Beatles roots to solo artist legend to controversial antiwar and social justice activist.

As the Vietnam war exploded and America’s youth was increasingly under attack at home for expressing its discontent, Lennon’s counter-cultural activities were increasingly monitored by the FBI on behalf of President Richard Nixon’s administration (Nixon himself was briefed on Lennon’s activities.)
The Quote:
John sings: ‘Nobody told me there’d be days like these.’ That was his true confession,” says Yoko Ono Lennon, “These songs have become relevant all over again. It’s almost as if John wrote these songs for what we are going through now.”

Living In The Material World with George Harrison

"Living In The Material World" WinMedia HI : LO

"Give Me Love" WinMedia HI : LO

"Miss O'Dell" WinMedia HI : LO

Video

Although it was 1973 when George Harrison claimed we are Living In The Material World, it's never been more true than it is today.

Capitol/EMI Music must think that too, since they have reissued George Harrison's classic album 'Living In The Material World' which will be available next Tuesday, September 26th.

The album has been re-mastered at Abbey Road Studios from the original analog tapes, and will be available in two different formats; single CD, and CD with bonus DVD. The new album also includes two additional tracks, both originally B-sides...“Deep Blue” (from 1971) and “Miss O’Dell” the flip of “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth.")

The single CD package contains a twelve page booklet with lyrics and extra photographs. The special limited edition package contains the CD with a companion DVD and an expanded forty page booklet.

The DVD features rare footage of George Harrison performing “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)” from his 1991 Japanese tour with Eric Clapton...a mini-feature edited from film commissioned by George in 1973 of the album’s production in Britain and America...and previously unreleased versions of “Miss O’Dell” and “Sue Me, Sue You Blues” set to visuals of unseen archived material.

J.J. Cale & Eric Clapton on 'The Road to Escondido'

"Eric and I have known each other for a long time and it was a great experience to finally make a record together; he's a great musician and it was a pleasure to work so closely on this project with him, " said J.J. Cale.
"This was the realization of what may have been my last ambition, to work with the man whose music has inspired me for as long as I can remember; there are not enough words for me to describe what he represents to me, musically and personally...I think it's enough to say that we had fun, made a great record, and I for one already want to make another, " said Eric Clapton.
Source: Jazz News : Cale and Clapton unite for 'The Road To Escondido'
Eric Clapton and J.J. Cale have recorded their first album of original songs together. The album's fourteen songs feature eleven originals by J.J. Cale, one original by Clapton, one song by John Mayer and a cover of the blues classic "Sporting Life Blues."

The album 'The Road to Escondido,' will be released on November 7th on Reprise Records.

The two guitarists/songwriters were inspired to record an album of original material after performing together in June 2004 at Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival in Dallas (pictured above.)

Jake Coco "Broken Hearts and Fairy Tales"

We've found a great new artist by the name of Jake Coco. He's got a new album called “Broken Hearts and Fairy Tales,” which he recorded all by himself. Influences include Elvis Costello, Elton John, Billy Joel, James Taylor and Butch Walker. And I'm telling you, this guy is the real deal. His appeal reminds me of Jude Cole; singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer.

Born in Cleveland Ohio in 1984, he began playing violin at age two, and taught himself guitar and drums by the time he was nine. By fourteen Jake was performing at local jazz, blues and rock clubs. After graduating high school in 2002, he was offered a full scholarship to the “Berklee School of Music.” But instead, he followed his passon for music and chose to continue performing with his band “Spenser.” Later, Jake returned home after two years of playing small clubs and colleges and began to write.

Sequestered in his basement studio for months, he wrote, arranged, produced, mixed and mastered the songs that became the album “Broken Hearts and Fairy Tales."

The first single "Graceland" is starting to get airplay, and you can view the video on his website.

Thanks David...here's another great new artist you've turned me onto!

CD World's plethora of new releases

There is a plethora of new releases this week and they're all over the map, but in a good way. Here's a tasty sampling from the fine folks at CD World.

John Mayer 'Continuum'
John Mayer's third studio album follows the multi-platinum 'Room for Squares' (2001) and 'Heavier Things' (2003), and marks his first turn as producer. It is his most soulful, cohesive collection yet and he says it's no accident that this project is where all of his efforts, his potential, and his disparate influences fully come together. *CD World Pick!!

NOW AVAILABLE in Cybers Music Store

Peter Frampton 'Fingerprints'
"This is the album I've been waiting my entire life to make, I've never done a complete collection of instrumentals" says Peter Frampton of his remarkable new CD, Fingerprints. It's an impressive 14-tune collection of guitar mastery that crosses several musical borders, from funked up R&B to razor-edged rockers to rootsy blues to country-flamed beauties to jazzy Django swing to reflective impressionism. Fingerprints features Frampton having exhilarating musical conversations with a who's who of the pop world, including Rolling Stones Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman, Pearl Jams' Mike McCready and Matt Cameron, original Shadows Hank Marvin and Brian Bennett, Allman Brothers/Govt Mule slide slinger Warren Haynes, Nashville pedal steel virtuoso Paul Franklin and gypsy guitar maestro John Jorgenson. *CybersPick!!

NOW AVAILABLE in Cybers Music Store

Robert Cray 'Live From Across The Pond'
Robert Cray's first live record in his 30-year career! Five-time Grammy winner and 12-time Grammy nominee Robert Cray and his fellow journeymen, touring over six months of every year, continue to provide audiences the world over with the kind of authentic, real music that keeps the band on top of its game. For the first time ever, Robert Cray's live performance is felt on CD. Performing on stages with such legendary artists as The Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan and Chuck Berry and having his songs recorded by the likes of Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Albert King and Tony Bennett has helped make Robert Cray a mainstay in popular music.

Bob Seger 'Face The Promise'
Bob Seger is one of the defining voices of American music. Classic, urgent, honest, and timeless, Seger has sold nearly fifty million albums in his career and earned eleven platinum and seven multi-platinum awards. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. 'Against the Wind' won a Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Group or Duo in 1980. Now, Capitol Records releases Bob Seger's first studio album in eleven years, Face The Promise. The album's first single is 'Wait For Me'. The new album also features the tracks 'Real Mean Bottle' with Kid Rock and 'The Answer's In The Question' with Patty Loveless.

Dr. John 'Definitive Pop'
Dr. John, a.k.a Mac Rebenack a.k.a. 'The Night Tripper' is the ultimate ambassador of the celebrated New Orleans sound. A brilliant boogie-woogie pianist with an expressive growl who throws rock, blues, R&B, and Mardi Gras bon temps into one immensely satisfying sonic gumbo. This 2-CD overview presents 30 classic tracks from the late 60s to the early 90s, including 'Iko Iko,' 'Such A Night,' 'Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya,' the Top 10 pop hit 'Right Place Wrong Time,' and the Grammy® winning 'Makin Whoopee!'.

Barenaked Ladies 'Barenaked Ladies Are Me'
Barenaked Ladies - the little indie band that could - have returned to self-rule with their own label, Desperation Records, and their most cohesive album since the quadruple-platinum Stunt. Barenaked Ladies Are Me still exudes the bands sense of fun while musically and lyrically demonstrating a maturity youd expect from guys who have played together forever. With one of rocks most devoted fanbases, Barenaked Ladies goes D.I.Y. with Barenaked Ladies Are Me. *CD World Pick!!

Between The Covers 'Between The Covers'
An all-star lineup including Eric Clapton, Madonna, Alicia Keys, Sheryl Crow, Lenny Kravitz, Mick Jagger and David Bowie, The Dixie Chicks, Sarah McLachlan and more are set to slip Between The Covers for this benefit album. Proceeds from the album, a compilation of covers of some of the greatest songs of this generation, will go to benefit the T.J. Martell Foundation, which supports cancer, leukemia, and AIDS research.

Black Keys 'Magic Potion'
Magic Potion, the Black Keys' fourth album, is a spectacularly stripped-down set of sneakily melodic blues-besotted rock concocted in the Akron, Ohio basement studio of drummer Patrick Carney. Guitarist-singer Dan Auedback is possessed of a compelling, hurt-beyond-his-years voice and an approach to lead guitar that is both wildly expressive and utterly succinct. The self-taught Carney, who anchors these tracks, may force writers to return "heavy" to the rock-critic lexicon as a seriously praiseworthy term. The Black Keys maintain a punk terseness to their adamantly do-it-yourself sound; they're as single-minded in their idiosyncratic evocation of the electric Mississippi blues as artists like the late Junior Kimbrough and R. L. Burnside as the Ramones were about early sixties rock and roll. *CD World Pick!!

David Gilmour's first and second solo albums are now digitally remastered...
The self-titled 'David Gilmour' originally released in 1978, features musical assistance from Steve Rance, Willie Wilson, Rick Wills, Mick Weaver and others. Nine tracks including 'There's No Way Out Of Here', 'Cry From The Street', 'I Can't Breathe Anymore' and more.

'About Face' Gilmour's second solo album was originally released in 1984, and features musical assistance from Jeff Porcoro, Pino Palladino, Anne Dudley, Steve Winwood, Ray Cooper, Roy Harper, Luis Jardim and Michael Kamen. Ten tracks including the hit single 'Blue Light' plus 'Love On The Air' and 'All Lovers Are Deranged', both co-written by The Who's Pete Townshend.

Los Lobos 'Town & The City'
The 13-track set - fittingly, the disc is the 13th studio album of Los Lobos 30-year-plus career - was recorded over the last several months, with the band doing its own production work. Tchad Blake, who's worked with the group for many of its past albums, handled mixing duties. The album partially reflects the East Los Angeles roots-rockers' experience as de facto immigrants in their own country, as well as unease with the current political situation in the land. The band is currently on an open-ended touring schedule, which is typical of their roadwork.

R.E.M. 'Best: IRS Years 82-87'
Disc 1 is a 21-track single-disc collection of hits and band favorites including 'Radio Free Europe' (R.E.M.s debut single), 'The One I Love' and 'It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)'. Disc 2 contains 21 tracks of rarities from the I.R.S. and R.E.M. vaults. Includes alternate takes, previously unreleased mixes, live recordings of familiar R.E.M. classics, an acoustic performance from the 1987 documentary film "Athens, GA - Inside Out," among them 10 never before released tracks. Each of R.E.M.'s four original members has selected a personal favorite for the rarities disc. The package includes descriptive track-by-track annotations in the band members own words plus newly-penned liner notes by rock scribe Anthony DeCurtis.

Randy Rogers Band 'Just A Matter Of Time'
Randy Rogers Band is blazing their own trail of success in Texas with their radio hits, spreading popularity, and engaging live performances. Their highly anticipated new album Just A Matter Of Time was produced with famed singer-songwriter-musician Radney Foster and features 12 new songs. Randy Rogers Band formed while Randy was at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, where Randy was pursuing a degree in public relations. It was there that he met and ultimately banded with the RRB counterparts and their varying personal music tastes. Guitarist Geoffrey Hill grew up influenced by rock while bassist Jon Richardson digested the outlaw sounds of Waylon and Willie. Fiddle player Brady Black came from the bluegrass lineage, and drummer Les Lawless has been influenced by the rhythms of country, rock and bluegrass.

Jihad Jerry & The Evildoers 'Mine Is Not A Holy War'
Devo co-founder, Gerald V. Casale, returns as Jihad Jerry, a conceptual character pointing out the absurdities of our world through the majesty of song. With him are the Evildoers (featuring Devo members Bob Mothersbaugh and Josh Freese). Together, they've cooked up their very own brand of politically-fueled rock and roll that lives somewhere between Devo, The B-52s, and Michael Moore.

On DVD:

The Police 'Everyone Stares'
Everyone Stares is a first-person account from Stewart Copeland of The Polices ascent from obscurity to worldwide fame. Produced, directed, written & edited by Copeland from over 50 hours of Super 8 movies he shot during the acclaimed trios heyday. The film offers an insiders perspective on touring, his band members and the adoring fans. Shown in the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, the movie was sold out for every viewing, received critical acclaim and will now be featured on Showtime® in August & September. Copeland scores this remarkable film using seven previously unreleased derangements of classic Police studio & live tracks, along with many original studio & live tracks. Narrated personally by Stewart, this DVD also includes over 20 minutes of bonus footage not seen in previous versions of the film and a bonus commentary by Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland.

R.E.M. 'Best: IRS Years 82-87'
18 tracks including 'Radio Free Europe', 'Talk About The Passion', 'Radio Free Europe (Live, The Tube)', 'Talk About The Passion (Live, The Tube)', 'So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)', 'Pretty Persuasion (Live, The Old Grey Whistle Test)', 'The One I Love', 'It's The End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)'. 'Finest Worksong' and more. Extras include an acoustic performances from 'The Cutting Edge', session outtakes, interview snippets, 'Pageantry' excerpts and the like.

Ginger Baker 'Live in Africa'

Eagle Vision USA just released a really cool DVD.

Ginger Baker "Live In Africa" is a fascinating documentary of this legendary drummer, best known for his work with sixties groups Cream and Blind Faith, playing with various African ensembles, including Fela Kuti.
In November 1971, Ginger Baker decided to set up a recording studio in Lagos, then the capital of Nigeria. Baker was one of the first rock musicians to realize the potential of African music. He also decided that it would be a rewarding musical experience to travel to Nigeria over land across the Sahara desert; a journey that would lead him into a number of adventures.

This film by Tony Palmer follows Ginger Baker's odyssey as he makes his journey and finally arrives in Nigeria to set up his studio, which would run successfully through the seventies as a facility for both local and western musicians.
Paul McCartney's Wings recorded "Band On The Run" there in 1973.

Electric Light Orchestra Remastered

Jeff Lynne has restored the Electric Light Orchestra album catalog for the group's 35th Anniversary. The Epic/Legacy labels on Sony Music will release three more ELO albums tomorrow, September 12th. Each one includes alternate takes, mixes and song versions.

'On The Third Day, Face The Music, and A New World Record' are the latest releases in the wave of ELO expanded CD's that will continue through the end of this year. We should see two more albums by Christmas; 'Out Of The Blue' (from 1977), and 'Balance Of Power' (1986.)

Already digitally remastered into expanded editions are:
'No Answer' (the band's first album in 1971)
'ELO 2' with "Roll Over Beethoven" (1973)
'Eldorado' A Symphony (1974)
'Discovery' (1979)
'Time' (1981)
'Secret Messages' (1983)

ELO thrived for fifteen years, from 1971 to 1986, under the guidance of Jeff Lynne. They recorded and released 12 original studio albums (and one live LP only in the UK,) through 1986, when Lynne disbanded the group.

At their peak the group generated a string of nine consecutive RIAA gold, platinum and multi-platinum albums, on three different record labels. ELO is one of my favorite orchestral rock groups of that era, and I enjoy Jeff Lynne's current works with Tom Petty, the Traveling Wilburys, George Harrison, and Paul McCartney.

Flotsam & Jetsom

Nope, I'm not talking about Flotsam and Jetsam, the thrash metal band that Jason Newsted left to join Metallica for.

Today's blog is more along the lines of random thoughts and stream-of-consciousness writing. Yeah, I'm feeling fragmented this week, so when this article about speed linking came to my attention, it just jelled.

ElectricGuitarReview has a fine example of speed linking; think of it as 'thrash-metal' for bloggers.

Check out our new CybersMusicStore, which has a secure shoppingcart powered by Amazon.com. I've already picked out that USB turntable for my trip down the vinyl highway.

Have you tried our CyberSearch? You can search just our site, the blogosphere, or the web; amazon.com, topix.net or just video...with only one keyword or name query.

Good info this week on The Doors 40th Anniversary celebration...at ClassicRock.about.com and Imagine Echoes...there's also a cool quiz about Jim and the band.

R.E.M. will be inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame on September 16th. Original drummer Bill Berry will be performing three songs with the band to celebrate.

TheRockRadio.com has a story about Mick using a telepromter during a recent concert...and the Stones roll into the US leg of their tour on September 20th. That's funny...used to be; the only 'Tele' on the stage belonged to the guitar player!

We have digital music and analog ears...

cybercoder (David):
I was reading an Imagine Echoes post about most listened to album, and it made me think. You know, I never listen to an entire CD anymore, since I use iTunes everything goes into the library and I listen to stuff from there.

Typically I listen to a certain genre, you know, a day of Blues, or I will tag all Eric Clapton and SRV, or maybe old stuff, but, I never listen to a complete CD by an artist.

Digital music has changed our listening habits. Whenever my wife goes on a roadtrip she sits down and makes a group of CD's based on her mood and length of the trip. And she really mixes it up, she will have the Bee Gees on the same disc as Def Leppard and Audioslave, just wantever she is into at the time. Very eclectic, and hard for me to take, lol.

For the road I will make a CD by genre or time. Maybe an acoustic CD with all my favorite acoustic tracks or a complete rocker with all the latest rock. Sometimes I will even put the same song performed by different artists together.

mikiesoft (Mike):
I like to make my own CD's using Itunes. I have such a large collection, but not every track is good on every CD, so I pick out my favorites by ripping everything into iTunes, and then my own CD's. I've amassed so many songs now, that I've begun to organize them by era, like the 60's, 70's, etc. Kinda like Time Life does on those late night infomercials you see on TV.

What's so cool about making your own CD collections is this...think of a really great time in your life, when you were young; something really meaningful. Then gather all the great songs from that time period, and put 'em all on CD. I usually wind up sequencing them in a number of ways, until I get some really good segways. Just throw all the tracks into an iTunes folder, and burn away!

I've started making my own holiday CD's too...especially for Halloween and Christmas. And this year, being our first on cybersmusic.com, I'll do a special CD to close out 2006. Now if I can just get that LaserMagic label maker doodad!

You get some really great CD's for listening in the car, where I do some of my best (and loudest) listening. It's the only place the neighbors don't complain about! But for home, I put the songs into folders for easy listening (and quick access.) I use iTunes almost exclusively, because it's easy to use and there's no subscription fee. I just wish their catalog was deeper, so I can collect some of the really older eclectic stuff.

Eclectic is what my LP collection is. I've wanted to digitize all my albums onto CD or DVD for years, and now I can with the new USB turntable. It's a dream come true for vinyl junkies!

It's funny isn't it? In the old days when you first moved into a new apartment, the stereo was the always the very first thing we set up. Now it's the computer and speakers.
