Beatles LOVE Cirque du Soleil

Sir George Martin and his son Giles are the musical directors for a new show that combines the music of the Beatles with the theatrics of Cirque du Soleil.

The Cirque du Soleil show, called LOVE, is a co-production with Apple Corps, which celebrates the musical legacy of The Beatles. It's an exclusive show at the Mirage in Las Vegas, to be presented in their custom-built theatre.

Sir George and Giles have created a unique soundscape of Beatles music for LOVE. "We wanted to make sure there are enough good, solid hit songs in the show, but we don't want it to be a catalog of 'best of's'," said Sir George Martin.
"We also wanted to put in some interesting and not well-known Beatles music and use fragments of songs. The show will be a unique and magical experience."
They wanted to create a Beatles experience rather than a Beatles story, taking the audience on an emotional journey rather than a chronological one," said Dominic Champagne.

Preview performances for LOVE begin June 2. The Gala Premiere will be held Friday, June 30, 2006. LOVE will be presented exclusively at The Mirage in Las Vegas. Apple Corps Ltd. is planning to release The LOVE album through EMI Music later this year.

Memorial Day Festival

(mikiesoft) My Dad spent over 20 years in the military, between the Air Force and the Army. My uncle was in the Air Force, and then Civil Service until he retired. My cousin served in the Navy and still works in the Civil Service.

I also have several friends who served in the military forces, so in their honor, to all the brave soldiers who have served their great country, I'd just like to say Thank You. May God Bless Us All.

(cybercoder) I think you covered it pretty good. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday today. All through the weekend the smell of cookouts has filled the neighborhood.

The "Don't Mess with Texas Music" Memorial Day Festival started off SummerFest 2006 with a 3-day concert that celebrated the best of Texas music, at the Gaylord Texan resort on Lake Grapevine, just north of Dallas/Ft. Worth international airport.

Last night was Blue Jeans 'N Blues Night, featuring 2006 Grammy Winner and Texas music legend Delbert McClinton. He rocked the house with his distinctive style of honky tonk, blues and country, including tunes from his recent Grammy-winning album "Cost of Living."

2006 Austin City Limits Music Festival

The 2006 Austin City Limits Music Festival is September 15th through the 17th in Austin, in the heart of the Texas hill country. What a perfect setting for this stellar lineup of bands and music artists of all kinds...showcasing local, regional, national and international acts known worldwide.

Austin City Limits is known far and wide for it's quality live shows in a studio setting, and their guest list reads like a who's who of music royalty.

This lineup alone would make the $100 3-day pass worthwhile, but sources say there's three times this many performances in store for this 3-day festival.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
Van Morrison
John Mayer
Sara Hickman
Willie Nelson
String Cheese Incident
The Flaming Lips
Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals
Ween
Aimee Mann
Ben Kweller
Jack Ingram
Son Volt
KT Tunstall
Asleep at the Wheel
Buckwheat Zydeco
Jimmie Dale Gilmore
The Subdudes
BoDeans
Guy Clark
Charlie Sexton
Lou Ann Barton
Beto and the Fairlanes
Trish Murphy

And that's just my favorites. But ACL has something for everyone.

livemusicblog.com seems to have the scoop on the "confirmed lineup of bands."

The Allman Brothers

The Allman Brothers are on the road again and still sounding great. After 37 years of rocking, the band has gone through immense changes and several lineups. The current band has 3 of the original 6 members with Gregg Allman, Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny Johanson "Jaimoe".

And our friends at Lost Melodies remind us that Duane Allman may be gone, but, not forgotten!

Derek Trucks will not be present during a portion of this tour as he has signed on with Eric Clapton during the his European Tour.

With such a long a rich history in music the best way to cover the Allman Brothers is to visit their website. It is one of the most extensive we have seen. No matter what part of the band or history you are looking for, you are sure to find it there.

The Biography page on the website has a very unique method of using questions people have asked, to create the content. Lot's of great info, like the answers to the mythical questions on how Duane Allman and Berry Oakley died at the same intersection.

The Chronology is also an excellent resource with a clear path of the bands lineup from the beginning to the current.

While My Ukelele Gently Weeps

Mike (mikiesoft) : I've seen Paul McCartney play "Something" on a ukelele as a tribute to George Harrison, and I've seen Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" done in various live settings, but I've never seen or heard this song played on a ukelele before!

David (CyberCoder) :And have you ever seen a ukelele played like this before ? Holy smoke Batman, that sounds fantastic. Makes me want to play the ukelele. Of course, a wee bit slower I am sure. The funny thing is that the young man who showed me this video had never heard the song before, then I loaned him my Jeff Healey - "Hell to Pay" CD. He came back all surprised the song was on there, of course then I had to share the original with him and tell him who George Harrison was.

Paul McCartney had something to say on the subject of ukuleles...

Crosby, Still, Nash & Young 2006

The most amazing aspect of CSNY has to be their ability to move in and out of their group and solo efforts over the the last 39 years. Coming into CSNY each member left a trail of success with their former bands, Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds and The Hollies. And yet, through the last 4 decades they have each had success together and apart. Their are few if any other bands that have accomplished this feat and shown their true musical dexterity.

David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash & Neil Young have a long history of politically based music and they think this year is a perfect time to hit the road with more of the same. Neil Young released "Living with War" this month and is set to debut live during the CSNY Freedom of Speech Tour '06.
Billed as "An Evening With Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young," Freedom Of Speech '06 will tour with no opening act, and the shows will spotlight an extended set from CSNY, as in their past outings. Repertoire will include their classic work together, as well as favorites from their storied individual careers. Source : Jensen Communications

KT Tunstall

While doing some research and reading the Guitar Player website a new name kept popping up, KT Tunstall. It was amazing how much was available on this rather new artist.

This video really got some attention, using a loop petal, tambourine and some inventive rhythm created with her guitar and voice she is a one person band, and she pulls it off flawlessly. KT has a unique blend of pop, folk and blues with a great sense of rhythm.

Her main guitars are a semi-acoustic 62 Guild Starfire and a Gibson Dove acoustic. KT' s debut album Eye To The Telescope is doing very well and is currently # 40 on the Billboard Chart. According to some sources KT will be playing at the 2006 Austin City Limits Festival this year.

There are a lot of video clips to see KT in action, here are just a few.

May 5, 2006 - KT Tunstall on The Late Show with David Letterman performing "Suddenly I See".

Julian Lennon currently in the studio

Julian Lennon is currently in the studio recording his next album with an undisclosed writing partner.

He is also building an impressive collection of family memorabilia, like drawings by his dad and postcards he received as a child; plus the chrome apple mascot from the car John Lennon crashed in Scotland with Julian at his side.

I was honored to meet Julian at a WEA party after his first concert tour for "Valotte." He is a very soft spoken English gentleman, and looks and sounds a lot like his famous father.

Julian Lennon Timeline:

2000: Julian chose to mark the 20th anniversary of his father's death by releasing a short statement through his website.

1998: "Photograph Smile" is Julian's last album, released through his own label, Music From Another Room, in the UK, Australia and Japan in 1998 and in the US and Europe the following year. Julian's official Website julianlennon.com was also launched at that time.

1991: "Help Yourself" album is released.

1989: "Mr Jordan" album was released in the US and UK, with a guest performance from Peter Frampton including the single "Now You're In Heaven."

1986: "The Secret Value of Daydreaming" album is released. Also three Julian Lennon songs appear on the double album from Dave Clark's "Time" musical.

1984: Julian's critically acclaimed debut album "Valotte" is released.

There's also a cool collection of family history at the official website of the Liverpool Lennons, featuring Julian, John and Cynthia Powell Lennon.

Django Reinhardt

So you think you have heard all the hot licks by the great guitarist?

Well, ya gotta check out Django Reinhardt. He has inspired some of the greatest guitarist in the world. And the amazing part is that he does it with only 2 fingers. He lost the use of his 3rd and 4th finger of his left hand at the age of 18 and it did not stop him from developing his style and becoming one of the greatest Jazz musicians of all time.

If you listen closely you can almost hear some of today's great hard rockers in the riffs. This guy was fast, and smooth. There are 2 great videos on You Tube that allows you to hear and see Django in action.

YouTube Video - Django Reinhardt

YouTube Video - Django Clip

Some key rock and roll facts regarding Django : Source Wikipedia

Jimi Hendrix, is said to name one of his bands the "Band of Gypsies" because of Django's music.

The Allman Brothers Band song Jessica was written by guitarist Dickey Betts in tribute to Reinhardt. He wanted to write a song that could be played using only two fingers.

Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi was inspired by Reinhardt to keep playing guitar after a factory accident that cost him two fingertips. Thus, Toni Iommis' music and Black Sabbath were also influenced by Django.

Dhani Harrison thenewno2

I haven't seen or heard anything about Dhani Harrison since his father's tribute concert in 2002, the concert for George.

Dhani Harrison is working on a new project called thenewno2.com.

They have a very simple website that gets the message across...Dhani and company are putting their music together, and the previews are great!

They've got four new songs you can sample on their site:
1. Say
2. Lord Lord
3. Out of Mind
4. Truly

Their new video "Choose What You're Watching" is uptempo, catchy and a bright commentary on today.

You can preview the video under the visual link.

Dhani looks just like the younger George I remember from A Hard Day's Night.

I can't wait for the full length release.

Happy Mothers Day

As you may have realized CybersMusic is a collaboration of 2 brothers, so we thought it fitting to say Happy Mothers Day. Our mother passed away 11 years ago, but her spirit lives on and her inspiration has always helped guide us, especially in music.

Mom always encouraged our love for music. Our sister took piano lessons, my brother had his drums and guitar, and I followed with my guitar. Mom would have us play for her every chance she had. And if anyone complained about the rock and roll she was quick to defend us, as long as we "minded our manners" and were "respectful of others".

Mom was a big Swing Era and Elvis fan. She made sure to teach us about roots and how even our heavy rock and roll owed a lot to people like Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and The Dorsey Brothers. And at the same time, she made sure we respected and at least listened to the Country and Western music my father liked.

And I always remember the Benny Goodman story, I highly recommend the movie with Steve Allen. If you read the history of Goodman you will find that there are a lot of reasons to give him credit for helping start Rock and Roll.

Thanks Mom, and Happy Mothers Day !!

Eric Clapton Fan Club Magazine Online

How many artists deserve their own magazine, record label or even a website?

We know of at least one, and that's Eric Clapton.

Eric Clapton Portal

The Eric Clapton Online Fan Club official magazine is Where's Eric! and features live reviews, plenty of backissues, and a special bonus bonanza of Cream.

I just love their reunion concert slogan...

"They came (back), they saw, they conquered!"

The Eric Clapton Fan Club Magazine publishes in England with worldwide distribution.

Great cast too; some of Clapton's closest friends are featured;

John Mayall, Jack Bruce, BB King, Nathan East, and that's just the tip of the ol' stratocaster.

Pat Travers

From blues to hard rock Pat Travers has covered it all. With a unique sound and energy his music has been inspirational to a lot of guitarist the world over. And after 30 years he is still performing live and recording.

A couple of his early albums are must haves for any collection. Highly recommended are Makin Majic and Putting it Straight from 1977. The 1978 release Go For What You Know has been considered a classic by many. And a fan favorite is Crash and Burn from 1980, which includes Snortin Whisky.

In 1990 Pat released his anthologies, Vol I and Vol 2. Both of these include all the great tunes from his collection with a host of great musicians, including Pat Thrall, Tommy Aldridge, Mars Cowling, Don Brewer and Michael Schrieve.

Rock Memorabilia

I've always been fascinated by collections of rock memorabilia like posters, albums, and the like. I've got my own modest collection of course, but I think it probably has more sentimental value to me than monetary worth on the open market.

I found this great story about rock memorabilia at RollingStone.com as I was browsing my bloglines RSS feeds recently...

But the most awesome website on collecting rock memories through vintage posters, tickets, backstage passes, laminates, T-shirts, stickers, pins, mugs, water bottles, programs, books, hats and general swag just has to be wolfgangsvault.com. Remember them? They picked up a ton of forgotten concert booty from the late great Bill Graham, recovered from a lost archive found underneath one of the Fillmore offices.

A pleasant Surprise from Paul Simon

Paul Simon performed on Saturday Night Live last weekend and made me realize it's been some time since I heard anything from him. He was having fun too; you could tell by the way he was smiling on stage. It reminded me of all the wonderful songs he has given us through the years.

A quick search found that his new album "Surprise" is set for release today, May 9th.

His official website also caught my attention...
"Surprise" features Simon's masterful voice, and showcases some of his finest guitar work to date. Augmented by Eno's innovative soundscapes, "Surprise" includes contributions from musicians including Steve Gadd, Herbie Hancock, and Bill Frisell.
Paul Simon's ability as a songwriter amazes me. He always finds a way to reinvent his music and weave it into a tapestry of emotion, thought and timely commentary. "Surprise" is exactly that.

Paul has 2 television appearances scheduled this week, so set that TIVO.

Monte Montgomery

Holy Smoke !!

Thanks to Pandora I heard Monte Montgomery today. This guy is unreal, not only is he a fabulous guitar player but his arranging and vocals are phenomenal. I have not heard sounds like this from an acoustic guitar in a long time. The sound fills a real void for me as I have always been an acoustic fan and have not been turned on to anything like this since my first encounters with the sounds of Michael Hedges or Dave Matthews.

It's times like this that I wonder where I have been for the last 10 years. I immediately went to Amazon and searched out Monte's catalog. There are 6 albums listed dating back to 1998. Makes me wish I had not left the San Antonio / Austin area all those years ago, think of all the great music I missed.

Time to quit typing and hop over to iTunes for some new music!

Welcome to The Official Monte Montgomery Web Site!

Denton Arts & Jazz Festival

Springtime in north Texas means outdoor music festivals. One of the most exciting is the
Denton Arts & Jazz Festival, that just closed last weekend. It's music food and art, all wrapped up in a two-and-a-half-day weekend in Denton, Texas.

I kinda think of Denton as a little Austin. The University of North Texas music programs draw thousands of talented artists every year. So the large population of students from UNT and other notably schools there make the local scene pretty lively. And there's a number of good local music clubs, bars and restaurants where you can hear live music, any day of the week.

Lively is what you can expect from the annual Denton Arts & Jazz Festival, held this year at the Civic Center Park in Denton, Texas. The two reviews I've read so far said the attendance was short of the expected 200,000, but the smaller crowds made for a more enjoyable festival.

Among the six performance stages, the headliners were Joshua Redman, the Robert Cray Band and Brave Combo, while local and regional artists also included the N'Awlins Gumbo Kings, the Light Crust Doughboys, Pops Carter & the Funk Monsters, and Freddie Jones.

The University of North Texas showcased their incredible pool of talented student and staff with performances by many of their jazz ensembles and groups. Most notably the One O'Clock Lab Band, but also included the UNT Jazz Singers, L5 Guitar Ensemble, Jazz Repertory Ensemble, Zebras, 3 O'Clock Lab Band, 2 O'Clock Lab Band, Latin Jazz Ensemble and
Faculty Jazz Group.
