James Gang rides again

James Gang
The original three members of the James Gang have once again reunited...this time for a summer tour, commencing August 10th at the Sturgis Road Rally. Tour dates extend into September, as of this writing.

This summer tour lineup includes James Gang founding member and drummer Jimmy Fox, bassist Dale Peters and Joe Walsh on guitars, vocals, slide, wah-wah and special effects. This particular lineup recorded their most memorable album "James Gang Rides Again."

After a live album, Walsh departed to focus on his solo projects and later joined the Eagles. He was replaced by Tommy Bolin, who brought in his new songs and recorded "Bang." Bolin left later on to do his solo projects, and then joined Deep Purple.

Rewind back to 2001, which was the first time in thirty years that this lineup of the James Gang had reunited to perform a series of full-blown public concerts, for the Cleveland Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame charities. Inspired, the band gathered together again in 2005 for another group of sold-out shows.

Zappa plays Zappa the Tour de Frank

Dweezil Zappa is performing Frank Zappa music in concert for the first time with an incredible band of musicians and guest stars Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio and Napoleon Murphy Brock.

video of Steve Vai and Dweezil Zappa guitar duel @ show in L.A…
Here'’s an excerpt from a Frank Zappa interview about his Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster…

Another one of my Strats is the one Hendrix burned at the Miami Pop Festival; it was given to me by this guy who used to be his roadie. I had it hanging on the wall in my basement for years until last year when I gave it to Rex and said, "Put this sucker back together," because it was all tore up. The neck was cracked off, the body was all fired, and the pickups were blistered and bubbled. That's the one that's got the Barcus-Berry in the neck. A lot of people thought I had Hendrix's guitar from Monterey, but it was from Miami; the one at Monterey was white and this one is sunburst.

Paula Cole "Postcards from East Oceanside"

Paula Cole has a new greatest hits album out, called "Postcards from East Oceanside."

She's one of my favorite female vocalists. I guess because her voice is so expressive and she's got such a wide range.

She's sang backup vocals with Peter Gabriel on tour. That's pretty big shoes to fill, especially on the beautiful duet "Don't Give Up," which featured Kate Bush on the studio recording of the album "So."

The Arcadia Theater - Dallas, Texas

The Arcadia Theater has been a landmark of entertainment in Dallas, Texas for the past eighty years. That came to an end last week when the theater and adjoining buildings burned down to the ground.

The Arcadia started with vaudeville in 1927 and then movies. The theater fell into disrepair for some years and was renovated as a live music venue in the early eighties. The first concert in 1982 was Bonnie Raitt, followed by all kinds of bands, from country (Dwight Yoakam) to punk. The Arcadia became a gateway venue for those artists passing through that nebulous middle ground from buzz band to supersstar. Other notable first time concert appearances were Metallica and Nine Inch Nails.

I've been to a couple of different concerts there and the atmosphere was always unique for a concert experience. The small and intimate surroundings (seating only 900) made for a more interesting show and a cozy balance between the artist and the audience. I've seen The Cure there, which was a real trip mostly because of their freaky fans.

But the two man show of Patrick Moraz and Bill Buford was the best! Bill Bruford had an acoustic drumset with those Simmons electronic pads, (which were new in the 80's) programmed to trigger brief horn sections and orchestrations. He's always been one of my favorite drummers, ever since I first heard his playing on The Yes Album.

Patrick Moraz just had a couple of massive keyboards, but he always sounds like he's got ten hands all going at the same time. Man, I couldn't believe how much music was coming from the stage...from only two guys! Interesting to note, both musicians played in Yes, but not at the same time. Bruford early on, and then Moraz later on in the seventies.

Bruford and Moraz actually recorded a couple of albums together during that period in the eighties, and I was fortunate enough to witness them live, on the stage at the Arcadia Theater. Even better, I got backstage and met my drum hero Bill Bruford and he signed a cymbal for me. I call it my "status cymbal."

But all kidding aside, I will miss the Arcadia...it was a truly unique venue for live music.

Todd Rundgren Drives The New Cars

The New CarsTodd Rundgren celebrates a birthday today. Born June 22,1948, Todd was influenced by the early R&B sounds of Philly radio, and was playing guitar by ear by the time he was in high school.

His lengthy and amazing career has been covered in-depth by his cult-like fans, so instead of boring you with TRivia, I'll just list out a few tasty sites that delve into the details.

Wikipedia has a nice biography

The Todd Rundgren Connection

Official website

Always inventive, Todd Rundgren has joined up with former members of The Cars. The band, under the name of The New Cars, has released a new album. A national tour, dubbed the Road Rage Tour, started off with Blondie, but shows have been either cancelled or postphoned because Cars guitarist Elliott Easton is out with a broken clavicle.

Les Paul celebrates 91

Les Paul just celebrated his 91st birthday on June 9th. He's a living legend, and just about every guitarist on the planet has played on one of his guitars.

Along with Gibson, he introduced the first solid body electric guitar in 1952, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Not only an inventor, Les Paul is also an amazing guitar virtuoso and recording pioneer. He was instrumental in developing multi-track recording.

Gibson has a great biography about Les Paul.

The Les Paul Legacy : The Man, the Sound and the Gibson Guitar in paperback is due to be released soon. Should be good reading, giving us a glimpse of how history shaped our beloved electric guitar.

The month of June is full of birthdays...another Paul (as in McCartney) just celebrated his sixty-fourth birthday. I have half a dozen friends that share birthdays this month too.

Father's Day Rocks

Our friend Dave at classicrock.about.com has offered some Father's Day gift ideas, and we thought that was a pretty good idea. In fact, we've got some of our own ideas about what dad might want this year.

Now our dad is a big country music fan, so I'll start off with what I think would be on his wish list...

The Very Best of Roy Clark on CD - Roy was a fine guitar picker and a standard on the classic country TV show Hee Haw, which dad watched every week.

The Buck Owens Collection (1959-1990) 3-CD Box Set
- Buck was another staple of the Hee Haw gang and a pioneer of the Bakersfield honky tonk sound.

Merle Haggard's discography is a mile long and has more greatest hits packages than some artists have albums, but his 20 Greatest Hits CD (Remastered) has most of the county gems I remember.

The Essential Johnny Cash (Original Recording Remastered) 2-CD set includes some of his biggest hits. I'd rather give this original set, than the soundtrack to Walk The Line.

The CD of A Master and His Music is a great description for this Chet Atkins collection, featuring duets with Dolly Parton, Hank Snow, Jerry Reed and Les Paul.

Speaking as a dad myself, I love my techie toys. And what dad wouldn't love one of these high tech upgrades?

A LightScribe Direct Disc CD or DVD recorder will give him a great new facelift for those home spun music and movie discs.

Yeah the iPod is cool, but the Pioneer Inno XM offers portable XM Satellite Radio plus the ability to play your MP3s and WMA audio files. And you can record any of the 170 XM channels including music, sports, talk shows and live concerts!

For the guitar loving dad, give him something from Fender's Diamond Anniversary online gift store. If you can't afford that 60th Anniversary American Stratocaster, then maybe one of the Fender GMP Diecast Miniatures will fit your budget.

And just in case my daughter is reading along, I'd just like to mention this beautiful Ludwig drumset I found on musiciansfriend.com. The Ludwig Classic Maple five-piece drumkit is a replica of the set that John Bonham played in the early years of Led Zeppelin, before he switched to Vista-Lites.

The Waybacks

The Waybacks are an acoustic folk rock band that jump all over the musical genre map. I found them while browsing through tribe.net looking at drum circles.

Their refreshing mix of styles remind me of something like Jethro Tull meets Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. Sounds strange, I know, but give 'em a listen and you'll be pleased at what you hear.

I sampled some of their latest album "From the Pasture to the Future" at itunes.com.

They jammed with Bob Weir at this year's Merlefest. There's a great review of the festival at jambase.com.

online reviews

In today's online world, with a little searching, you can find anything. Links really drive the web, and it's always great to find new sites. Especially ones that incorporate a number of sources into one comprehensive, readable text, along with reference links to audio and video.

I recently discovered metacritic.com, which reviews anything and everyone...music, DVD's, film, games, books and TV.

Cool thing about metacritic.com is how it not only allows reader comments, but encourages them as reviews and calculates ratings. Like on amazon.com and some others, you get a much better feel for an album (CD, DVD, movie or whatever) from the customer community, than from critics, who don't always serve the artist's best intentions about the work.

Under The Covers

Cover tunes can be so bad, but they can be quite tasty if the artist redoes the song with heart and soul and makes it their own. It also helps to start with really good material.

Since I found secondhandsongs.com, I looked at some of my favorite bands to see what covers they've done...and what other artists have remade in their tribute.

The Beatles are probably the most covered band in the world, with a total of 180 of their songs that other artists have performed. Eleanor Rigby has been redone the most times, by 118 artists; "Yesterday" comes in second at 86 times.

The Beatles
also did their share of cover tunes...26 songs ranging from Buck Owens' "Act Naturally" to The Miracles' "You Really Got a Hold on Me."

Eric Clapton has only had three of his songs covered, according to secondhandsongs.com; it seems like it would be more, however, ol' slowhand has redone 80 tunes and made them his own. With tributes going to Robert Johnson and BB King, probably the most.

Classic duets include Clapton's albums with BB King, but his most famous duet is probably with Duane Allman, as Derek & the Dominoes.

Thirty-two Jimi Hendrix songs have been experienced by other artists, ranging from the Gil Evans Orchestra to Rod Stewart and the Faces. "Little Wing" is my favorite Hendrix song; with my favorite covers done by Eric Clapton and Steve Ray Vaughan.

The Eagles have only performed three cover tunes, but other artists have redone 13 Eagles songs.

Crosby, Stills & Nash redid "Blackbird," and Jefferson Airplane covered "Wooden Ships."

Led Zeppelin did 12 covers of mostly blues material; and were covered by other artists a total of 33 times. Everyone from Tori Amos to Frank Zappa has done Zeppelin, with "Stairway to Heaven" remade a dozen times, even by Pat Boone and Dolly Parton.

Source: secondhandsongs.com is a database of cover songs...with over 40,000 listings.

There's even a couple of albums that are called Under the Covers...
Vol. 1 by Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs was just released in April...
and this 1996 release, which only bears mentioning for a great "cover!"

As a drummer, I've played in my share of cover bands, performing everything from country to rock, and folk to punk.

My favorite cover song albums are probably...
Faithful by Todd Rundgren
Stone Free: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix
Encomium: A Tribute to Led Zeppelin
Riding With The King with B.B. King and Eric Clapton

Grand Funk Railroad

Grand Funk Railroad is on tour again this year. One of the first rock and roll power trio's, they now have a 5 piece band that includes 2 of the original members, Don Brewer on drums and Mel Schacher on bass. The only original member missing is Mark Farner. Bruce Kulick formerly of KISS is now the lead guitarist and is joined by Max Carl on vocals and Timothy Cashion on keyboards.

Grand Funk is one of those bands that have a couple different fan bases, those fans that liked the original power trio sound and then the fans that enjoyed the more commercial sound starting in 1973 with We're an American Band. A lot of their original fans got highly upset when GFR added keyboardist Graig Frost in 1972. However, this was obviously a good choice as far as the mainstream was concerned. They reached the Top 10 on Billboard 4 times between 1973 and 1975.

Billy Preston 1946 - 2006

Billy Preston has passed away at age 59. Born September 9, 1946 in Houston, Texas, he was one of those amazing musicians that toured and recorded with just about everybody and was loved by all who knew him, performed with or enjoyed his music.

He died in Scottsdale, Arizona after a long illness that lead to respiratory failure and left him in a coma for months.

He was also known as the fifth Beatle because of his keyboard work on the White Album, Abbey Road and Let It Be. George Harrison had discovered Billy Preston when he was touring with Ray Charles, and introduced him to the Beatles.

Preston is the only artist to receive a label credit, which was on the Beatles single "Get Back." He was the first artist signed to Apple Records, where George Harrison produced Preston's first two solo albums for the label. "That's the Way God Planned It," his first LP in 1969 was produced by Harrison and featured Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Ginger Baker...later reissued in 1991 by EMI.

My favorite Preston performances are of him playing with the Beatles in their famous roof top concert above Apple Records, that appeared in the film "Let It Be." His work in "Get Back" alone probably qualified him as the fifth Beatle, according to producer Sir George Martin.

Billy Preston also appeared with Eric Clapton on tour, and George Harrison's "Concert for Bangladesh"; then later on in the "Concert For George," the tribute concert for George Harrison. That was the first time that Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr had performed together on stage since the breakup of The Beatles.

But Preston's work with Ray Charles was probably the most cherished by him. Brother Ray was considered his mentor, and Preston appeared in the Ray Charles tribute concert "Genius: A Night for Ray Charles." Preston also recorded with The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and toured Europe with Little Richard in 1962, where he met and became friends with the Beatles in Hamburg.

Hit Singles were "Outta Space," "Nothing From Nothing," "Will It Go 'Round In Circles," and "With You I'm Born Again," a duet with Syreeta Wright.

Preston was also the first musical guest on Saturday Night Live in October 1975. He co-wrote the song "You are So Beautiful" with Bruce Fisher, which was a hit for Joe Cocker.

Long John Baldry long lost release

"Boogie Woogie: The Warner Bros. Recordings" has finally been released on the exclusive Rhino Handmade label, in individually numbered, limited editions of 2500 copies.

These two albums, originally released on Warner Bros. in 1971 and 1972, were produced by Rod Stewart and Elton John, who were both inspired by Long John Baldry's mix of rock and roll, blues, and R&B.

The first single to garner attention and airplay in the U.S. was “Don’t Try To Lay No Boogie Woogie On The King Of Rock & Roll” and featured legendary rock and rollers Ronnie Wood, Klaus Voormann, and Mick Waller.
The Rhino website tells the story...
Born in London in 1941, Baldry got his start singing in church choirs before discovering his soon-to-be hero, Leadbelly, at age 12. In 1958 he went on the road with Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, playing Leadbelly tunes across Europe. By the early ’60s his busking had become so legendary as to inspire both Eric Clapton and Spencer Davis to pick up the guitar. After a stint in Blues Incorporated (Cyril Davis, Alexis Korner, Charlie Watts, Jack Bruce, Mick Jagger), Baldry joined the Cyril Davis All-Stars and brought on Rod Stewart, whom he’d seen drunkenly singing Rolling Stones songs on the train platform. Then came The Hoochie Coochie Men (with Stewart) and then Bluesology (with Reg Dwight, soon to be Elton John.)

Woodstock

Woodstock is probably the most famous of all rock concerts. The original 3-day music festival was held in August 1969 on Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, New York.

In August of 1994 the 25th anniversary of the Woodstock festival was celebrated in Saugerties, New York with another 3 days of music.

The 30th anniversary concert took place July 23rd, 24th and 25th 1999 in Rome, New York. Festival organizers said "it doesn't get older, it gets better."

There is talk of a 2006 reunion concert, but details are sketchy. I found some vague information on this site, but unfortunately the event and the original festival site are mired in lawsuits and legal wrangling.

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia says: "On August 12-13th, 2006, a two-day Woodstock anniversary concert is scheduled at the site. No artists have been announced yet.

Lordi wins Eurovision Song Contest

Finland has won the 51st Eurovision Song Contest, after a gripping competition in front of a capacity crowd in the Olympic Arena, Athens.

With the heavy metal anthem ‘Hard Rock Hallelujah’, Finnish rock band Lordi won the contest after an audience televote.

These guys are just plain bizarre, they make KISS look like a bunch of normal musicians.

“How weird is this? How cool is this?” said lead singer Mr Lordi. “Think about it, a rock band just won a pop song contest. This is weird, strange, interesting. We won the contest, looking like this. It just goes to show that Europe is not such a bad place.”
