Stevie Ray Vaughan

Of all the musicians that I have heard, none struck me like Stevie. From the very first time I heard him, I was in love with his music. Yes, there have been a score of incredible blues players, and there will certainly be more. But for some unknown quality, Stevie just had it. My all time favorite song by Stevie is Pride and Joy. While surfing and researching I came across some videos that I just had to share.

Visit our Stevie Ray Vaughan page for current posts around the Blogosphere.

Thanks Stevie !!

Bruce Springsteen - We Shall Overcome The Seeger Sessions

Columbia Records has just released We Shall Overcome The Seeger Sessions by Bruce Springsteen. The CD is a compilation of 13 traditional songs that are all related to the great Pete Seeger. If you listen to the previous 20 albums by Springsteen it is apparent that he has a deep interest and love for traditional folk music.
"So much of my writing, particularly when I write acoustically, comes straight out of the folk tradition. Making this album was creatively liberating because I have a love of all those different roots sounds... they can conjure up a world with just a few notes and a few words." - Bruce Springsteen
Whether you like Bruce or not, it is hard not to have respect for his volume of work. He also has a great reputation for his live performances. I was fortunate to see him during the Born in the USA tour in 1984, and it was a grand show. 22 years later I am sure he is still putting on a great concert. More information is available at the Official Bruce Sprinsteen website.

Springsteen will begin his latest tour on April 30 at the Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans, LA. The remainder of the tour is :

Phil Walden leaves a musical legacy of the south

The music world has lost a true pioneer. Phil Walden passed away on Sunday after a long battle with cancer. You may not recognize his name, but you do know the names of the artists that he helped build careers in the music business. Otis Redding...Al Green...Percy Sledge...Sam and Dave. And that's just the tip of the ice cube in your iced tea!

Phil Walden founded Capricorn Records in 1969 in Macon, Georgia. That music label helped define a generation of southern rock bands like the Allman Brothers, the Charlie Daniels Band, Wet Willie, the Marshall Tucker Band and Elvin Bishop.

In later years, Walden helped revive Capricorn and promoted new alternative bands Widespread Panic, 311 and Cake.

Some of Capricorn's biggest albums (year it released) and hit songs:

The Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East (1971)
"In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed"

Eat A Peach - Allman Brothers Band (1972)
"Ain't Wastin' Time No More"

Beginnings - Allman Brothers Band (1974)
"Whipping Post"

Keep On Smilin' - Wet Willie (1974)
"Keep On Smilin"

Where We All Belong - Marshall Tucker Band (1974)
"Take The Highway"

Struttin' My Stuff - Elvin Bishop (1975)
"Fooled Around And Fell In Love"

Night Of The Living Dregs - Dixie Dregs (1979)
"Night Of The Living Dregs"

Capricorn Records Presents: The Scepter Records Story - Various Artists (1992)
"Dedicated To The One I Love" - Shirelles
"Twist And Shout" - Isley Brothers
"I Say A Little Prayer" - Dionne Warwick
"Hooked On A Feeling" - B.J. Thomas

Dallas Guitar Festival & Drum World

The 29th Annual Dallas International Guitar Festival has concluded for another year. The brainchild of local guitar shop owner Charley Wirz, it started as a modest get together for guitar dealers and collectors. Today, the show draws tens of thousands of fans from all over the world.

Charley's Guitar Shop has been a local institution in Dallas since 1976...their booth at this year's show had some cool custom paint jobs on these acoustics, dubbed the Cowboy II and the Hawaiian.

The Gibson Custom Shop traveling exhibit was there.
Check out the wall of custom painted Flying V's.

Jon Kammerer Guitars had some interesting designs....this flag guitar of custom woods is one of my favorites from their collection.

EnRoute Music introduced the unique PorchBoard Floor Bass, which is perfect for solo or acoustic players to accompany themselves. The device is an amplified, analog low-end rhythm instrument that uses the natural technique of foot tapping to produce a player controlled bass beat with any style of music.

Drum World was disappointing in it's size and scope, but I made some new friends.

At the Roland Booth, I got to play their latest Vdrum kit, featuring six drumpads, hi-hat with pedal trigger, kick pedal trigger, three cymbals and sound module.
Roland also has a new electronic practice pad with built in metronome and input for audio source, like a CD. The deluxe model has over 100 midi sounds that you can jam along with.
Wow, I wish I had one of these as a kid practicing in my room!

I met John Aldridge, editor of Not So Modern Drummer magazine and owner of vintagedrumshop.com. John is currently working with the Ludwig Drum Company, adding his unique touch as the exclusive engraver of their newest Black Beauty Limited Edition snare drum. He also had a display of vintage kick pedals, dating back to the turn of the century.

Mike at Larry Morgan Music demonstrated the full-bodied sound of a Aquarian drum head on his snare. If you're not happy with the sound of your drums, check out these new heads, which approximate the old school deep-down-in-your-gut sound of calfskins.

The Lone Star Percussion booth had friendly and helpful staff that answered all my questions. Now in their 25th year, they have a large online store that stocks just about anything to do with percussion. You can beat their drums, but you can't beat their service!

Texas Music Cafe was out and about filming for PBS.

New Releases for April 2006

Van Morrison explores timeless country classics and makes them his own with "Pay The Devil" on Lost Highway Records.
You just can't go wrong with Van the Man!

Former Dire Straits guitarist vocalist Mark Knopfler and country folk songbird Emmylou Harris quietly spent the last seven years recording "All the Roadrunning"
on Warner Brothers WEA Records.
"I Trust You To Kill Me" is the first album on the new Ironworks Music label by Rocco Deluca and The Burden. Released last spring, this debut produced by Jude Cole, combines blues and rock with a soulful twangy sound that reminds me more of the Mississippi Delta than the band's home town of Long Beach, California.

Collector's Choice Music goes Elektra

Last December, I blogged about the Elektra Records label releasing some of their precious
archive material. Well, now these lil' gems are finally available on CD!

Elektra's label founder, Jac Holzman, has teamed up with Collector's Choice Music again to release yet another round of rarities.

These are both classic albums and long lost recordings by Phil Ochs, The Wackers, Joshua Rifkin, Oscar Brand, Sailcat, Mark Spoelstra, Susan Reed, Cyrus Faryar and many many others.

All these highly collectible CD's feature original artwork and new liner notes from Jac Holzman himself. Holzman has chronicled his life with Elektra Records in the book "Follow the Music: The Life and High Times of Elektra Records in the Great Years of American Pop Culture."

Collector's Choice has an amazing catalog of classic rock. I found Long John Baldry's "It Ain't Easy" there after searching for that album for years!

Visit ccmusic.com for the whole story.

Ritchie Blackmore's Night

Today, April 14th is Ritchie Blackmore's birthday.

Ritchie Blackmore and his band, Blackmore´s Night, have released their new album "Village Lanterne." He and his partner, vocalist Candice Night, delve deeper into their love of medieval music, without sacrificing Blackmore's original style.

Blackmore doesn't deny his rock roots, but weaves them into unique form of creative expression, combining melodic vocals and virtuoso guitar patterns. You can hear some very interesting instrumentation as well, which just goes to show that Blackmore and company continue to develop their own artistic process.

Their new album "Village Lanterne" is now available!

Blackmore's Night "Castles & Dreams" concert DVD was filmed in a German castle and also contains TV performances, video clips, and interviews.

The Beatles going Digital ?

According to Neil Aspinall of Apple Corp. and reported by Jonny Evans at Digital Music News the Beatles catalog is getting closer to being digitally available. Although their music has never been outdated, the delay has probably cost them in sales and the ability to gain a new audience with the younger generations. Of course for us "older" music junkies it doesn't matter how long it takes, we will still be adding the Beatles to our digital catalogs as soon as it is available.

Aspinall told the London court that the Beatles back catalog is being digitally re-mastered, and will be made available in both physical and downloadable formats.

Today is a Historic day

52 years ago today a song was recorded in New York that has been given credit for the start of Rock and Roll. Bill Haley and the Comets recorded Rock Around The Clock. It has always been considered the cornerstone of Rock and Roll, although Rocket 88 is also mentioned by a lot of historians as the real first Rock and Roll record.

Something I did not know...
"The lyrics were based on numerous blues tunes boasting of 24-hour-long romantic prowess (the term rock initially having had a sexual meaning), but in Haley's hands they took on a more innocent teenage atmosphere of dancing all night long." Source : Rock Around the Clock: Information From Answers.com:
No wonder we like Rock and Roll so much, and I guess that goes to prove that the sexual revolution and it's dovetail into Rock has a real basis.

Thanks Bill Haley !

PS: Just look at that picture, what a bunch of rough looking Rock and Roll hulligans.

lala.com

We've written about lala.com before, but that was before I received my first CD, Led Zeppelin's second album. About two weeks after registering at lala.com, I got this CD in the mail. And I didn't even have any of my CD's listed yet or paid a penny for anything!

Now I'm all jazzed about this online CD trading website. So I've listed just ten CD's I'm willing to ship to other members, and two of them came up as "ship." That means some other members of lala.com have those CD's on their "want list." So I agreed to ship them, and lala.com sends me free CD mailers, plus a round plastic cover for the disc itself. You just ship the CD and the artwork, and keep the jewel case (saves on shipping.)

You pay 1.49 for each CD you get. The more you ship, the more your rating goes up. And the more you list, the more likely you will get the CD's you're looking for (on your want list.)

Pretty cool concept. Now I'm just waiting for my free mailers so I can ship my CD's out.
Then maybe I can collect those CD's I've been wanting for years, but so hard to find at the local shops.

Motley Crue's Tribute drummer

Harvey Warren will probably not be the next Tim 'Ripper' Owens, but you can be sure he got the thrill of his life the other night when he went from tribute band Broken Toyz to playing the drums for Mötley Crüe in Calgary.
Motley Crue's publicist Dvora Vener Englefield said in a news release ....

"After playing multiple shows wearing a brace and taking anti-inflammatory injections, Tommy Lee's doctor instructed him to give his injured right hand wrist a break after his tendinitis made it difficult for him to perform," Englefield said.
Warren works in a Starbuck's by day, and says he has been a fan of the Crue for more than 2 decades. It seems the show went on, and everyone worked together to keep the music playing.

Very reminiscent of the Judas Priest switch back in 1996, although this looks like a one shot deal, it certainly brings more attention to the Tribute bands of the world.

Congratulations Harvey !

RCA signs Sandi Thom

This is what technology is all about. From a basement a musician can perform and build a following that numbers in the thousands. Sandi Thom's first webcast reached 70 people and went has high as 70,000. That is just incredible. How many musicians have burned themselves out over the years trying to reach a solid following. And make no mistake, Sandi did grind it out just like all musicians, however, she also found a way to reach the masses using the internet.

As more musicians get together with (or become) technicians (geeks) we should see an increase in this type of activity. This should not, and will not be an exception; but the rule in the future.

Congratulations to Sandi Thom.

Trapt

I just found some great music in the strangest place. My desk, my computer, yeah that's right, on my own computer. My kids decided to watch some TV tonight so I put the headphones on and opened up iTunes. As usual, I start iTunes in the "Purchased" folder and check out what my kids (and wife) have been downloading. It's a good way to keep an eye on them and also find new music.

I look, listen and call out each title to find out who downloaded each track. I have 2 girls, 13 and 17. And I am suprised by some of the selections.

  • Lights and Sound by Yellowcard - 17 yr old, and maybe a little bit harder edge than normal.
  • I'm so sick by Flyleaf - same as the first track
  • Temperature by Sean Paul - 13yr old, no suprise, a little risque with a good groove.
  • Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd - 13 yr old, woulda thought it was the other kid, but ok.

Now, the tracks that really got me going.

Waiting by Trapt & Echo by Trapt. I had heard Waiting on the radio, but did not remember to look it up at the time. I really like the sound this band has so I start a little search. As usual I intentionally look at 3rd party sites before going to the Official Trapt site. The first quote I see really gets my attention.
"Their blend of courageous intensity and sweet melodicism suggests a band weaned on equal parts Soundgarden and Pink Floyd, Korn and Metallica," critic Bob Gulla wrote in Guitar One
Wow, cmon now. That's a wide range of sounds.....and a very accurate quote. Check out the Official Trapt website. Not since the first time I heard 3 Doors Down have I been so impressed with a new band. They have the ability to go from commercial pop driven rock to a harder edged sound. They have certainly got my attention. And a really cool website too!
