At the Crossroads of Fender and Gibson

While having one of our typical discussions the topic of guitar players who have signature guitars came up. There are some guitars that we just did not know existed, such as the Schecter UltraCURE Robert Smith.

One of our favorite guitar players is Eric Clapton, and we were talking about his signature guitar. However, we realized there were more than one. Eric has several, including a Gibson Crossroads 335, Signature Stratocaster and a Martin Acoustic.

Who else has been endorsed by both leading guitar makers Fender and Gibson?

And we know just the guy to turn to for this information.

Follow us over to Electric Guitar Review and let's see if Cary can answer this question and tell us about some of the other great signature guitars that are out there.

Seether - Shaun Morgan going to rehab

Seether is going to bail on a three week tour with Staind and Three Days Grace so Morgan can enter rehab. At least he knows he needs help. For the fans hopefully the tour dates get made up sometime. Seether was planning on performing acoustically and there are probably a lot of fans that were going to some of these shows as much for Seether as any of the other groups.

"I need help with addictions that I can't kick on my own," Morgan said in a statement. "These things are making me sick, and could potentially harm me permanently, so I need to take care of them as soon as possible.

"I'm deeply sorry that this news comes right before a planned tour, especially one that I was so excited about, and I hope that everyone understands," he added.

Telluride Blues & Brews Festival

“Out of the 90 different countries I've been to, I've never seen anything more beautiful than what you have here.”
- B.B. King, 2004 Telluride Blues & Brews Festival
The 13th Annual Telluride Blues & Brews Festival will take place the weekend of September 15th, 16th and 17th, in beautiful Telluride, Colorado.

The festival features three days of music from world renowned musicians performing live on the famous Telluride Town Park stage, late night jams in the local juke joints, an acoustic blues camp, the free acoustic artist series, blues for breakfast, the Rainbow kids area, and the Grand Tasting on Saturday, from fifty choice microbreweries serving up their handcrafted "cream of the barrel."

This year's artist lineup is spectacular:

Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers - Saturday Sept. 16th - his 20th Anniversary deluxe box set just released featuring 4 CDs and bonus DVD.

After the festival ends in Town Park , the music continues at ten pm on Friday and Saturday nights at the “juke joints,” located in various venues in Telluride and Mountain Village . The after hours jam takes place on Saturday night from two to four am in one of the juke joint venues.

The Fais Do Do (pronounced "fay dough dough") takes place on Sunday night at ten pm at the Sheridan Opera House. It's kind of like their "closing party" and tickets are extremely limited.

The Grand Tasting is on Saturday from noon until three pm, right on the festival grounds, so you can still enjoy the live music while sampling beer from fifty microbreweries!

There's also an acoustic blues competition with the top six entries performing in downtown Telluride on Friday of the festival. The winner will be awarded a Gibson guitar, $300 and a main stage performance on Saturday.

The festival typically runs until eight pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Friday gates open at 11:30 am, Saturday at 11:00 am and Sunday at 10:30 am.

Tickets are general admission and usually sell out early, right after they go on sale in March. Since it's a three day festival, there are special ticket options, like single day passes, VIP three day passes, and early bird three day passes. There's several camping options as well, but it typically sells out and fills up early, so plan ahead.

Journey from Infinity to Greatest Hits

Journey continues its reign at the top of a short list of second generation San Francisco rock bands whose music has truly stood the test of time. They've sold over 43 million records in the U.S. alone.

Columbia/Legacy Records is re-releasing the Journey catalog on CD and DVD, with bonus tracks, B-sides, soundtrack and live material. Available August first from Sony Entertainment, here's a breakdown of the new packages.

With the introduction of Steve Perry’s distinctive lead vocals, Journey took a giant step on their fourth album. "Infinity" released in 1978, produced by Roy Thomas Baker, featured their first three mid-chart singles, “Wheel In the Sky,” “Anytime,” and “Lights” b/w “Somethin’ To Hide,” along with the concert favorite, “Patiently.” The LP spent nearly two and a half years on the Billboard chart and was RIAA triple-platinum.

"Wheel In The Sky" @ Windows Media : Real Player : Quicktime

As touring demands accelerated, jazz trained drummer Steve Smith joined in late 1978 (replacing Aynsley Dunbar, who joined Jefferson Starship.) The next album, "Evolution" (released in 1979 and again produced by Baker,) contained “Just the Same Way” and Journey’s first major Top 20 hit single, “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’.” Again, this LP spent almost two years on the chart but took only five years to reach the RIAA’s three million sales mark.

The "Departure" album was co-produced in 1980 by Baker’s assistant Geoff Workman and Journey’s sound engineer Kevin Elson. In addition to “Good Morning Girl/Stay Awhile,” the album contained the new Journey anthem “Any Way You Want It.” The tune earned them their first Top Ten album, which has also gone on to triple-platinum over the years. This new expanded edition adds two bonus tracks: “Natural Thing” (B-side of “Don’t Stop Believin,") and “Little Girl” (from the original motion picture soundtrack of Dream After Dream, an obscure foreign film whose entire score was performed by Journey.)

"Any Way You Want It" @ Windows Media : Real Player : Quicktime

Their seventh studio album, "Escape" was co-produced by former engineer Mike Stone (known for his studio work with Queen, Kiss, America and others) and Elson. The LP was released the first week of August 1981, coinciding with MTV’s historic sign-on of 12:01 a.m., on August first. It was pumped up by the summer take-off single, the Top Five “Who’s Crying Now,” which earned the band a prestigious spot opening for the Rolling Stones at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia on September 12th. The same date that "Escape" hit number one, the band’s first and only appearance at the top of the Billboard pop charts. This new expanded edition also has multiple bonus tracks.

"Don't Stop Believin" @ Windows Media : Real Player : Quicktime

Fourteen years into Journey’s career, Columbia released the band's Greatest Hits album in 1988. It initially reached number ten on the Billboard 200 Albums chart, where it stayed for 21 months, and has sold fourteen times platinum. This new expanded edition adds one bonus track, “When You Love A Woman."

It was in 1996, when the classic Journey lineup of guitarist Neal Schon, singer Steve Perry, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, bassist Ross Valory, and drummer Steve Smith reconvened for the first time in ten years to record "Trial By Fire." Their 10th studio album was also the long-awaited follow-up to 1986’s Raised On Radio. To celebrate the new release in 1996, Columbia/Legacy issued newly digitally remastered CDs of "Captured" (Journey’s first double-LP and first live album, 1981,) and the studio albums "Frontiers" (1983) and of course "Raised On Radio" (1986.)

In 2001, the 2-CD Essential Journey was released, with over 130 minutes of chart hits and signature album tracks (from 1978 to ’96). This was followed in 2003 by Journey Greatest Hits DVD (1978-1997,) 18 tracks that spanned from 1978’s “Wheel In the Sky” to 1997’s “When You Love a Woman” (from "Trial By Fire.") In 2005, "Live In Houston 1981: The Escape Tour" arrived on DVD. It's one of the first MTV concerts ever broadcast and has been certifield plantinum by the RIAA.

Journey’s self-titled debut album was issued in April, 1975. It was followed by "Look Into the Future" (January 1976) and "Next" (February 1977,) their first LP to break inside the Top 100.

Phish Live In Brooklyn > Catch a DVD!

CybersMusic is giving away a Phish DVD set! That's right! It's a double disc DVD set, with a catchy Phish magnet! Just read our post and find out how You can be a winner!!

In a career spanning more than 20 years, Phish became one of the most significant live music phenomena of all time. On the basis of word-of-mouth about their performances—with virtually no radio hits or video support—the band grew from playing club gigs along their native East Coast to drawing 100,000 music fans to their multi-day festivals in remote corners of the country. At every turn, Phish managed to win over newcomers while maintaining the loyalty of their fans with a broad repertoire, splendid virtuosity, and by making a unique event of each show.

Live in Brooklyn was filmed and recorded June 17, 2004, where the band played two consecutive nights at Keyspan Park baseball field on Coney Island. It was the first show after Phish’s emotional May 2004 announcement that their upcoming tour would be their last.

Live in Brooklyn was shot by eight cameras in HD and is presented in maximum quality on two dual-layer DVDs with 5.1 Surround Sound. The two-DVD set features the entire 6/17/04 concert (two sets of music) and bonus material including excerpts from sound check, backstage footage, and three full songs from the 6/18 performance. The three-CD soundtrack—which will be sold separately—is the entire first night on three CDs remixed and mastered from the band’s digital multi-track tapes.

The material on Live in Brooklyn ranges from Phish live classics to rarities. Like all of the band’s shows, the Coney Island concerts included some surprising interpretations of others’ songs, as well as standout improvisational performances. The first set closes with a version of Edgar Winters Group’s “Frankenstein,” and midway through the second set, the group performs Eumir Deodato’s eerie “Also Sprach Zarathustra” theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The concert also includes Phish’s first live performances of “A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing” and “Nothing.” Live in Brooklyn marks the first DVD release and second CD release by JEMP Records, a new label devoted to releasing what the band members consider the greatest and most important shows of their career. The band’s DVD was certified platinum by the RIAA. In fact, all Phish DVD's have debuted at number one or two.

Now...You have a chance at winning this double DVD set of Phish "Live In Brooklyn" along with a catchy Phish ticket magnet! Just email an entry into phish@cybersmusic.com One lucky winner will be drawn at random during the month of August. Winner will be notified by email, so please send a valid email and shipping address. This is our first contest, so we're pretty darn excited about hearing from You!

The Live in Brooklyn shows were simulcast live in movie theaters nationwide, arguably the most successful live theatrical broadcast to date, with legions of loyal fans dancing in the aisles in nearly 50 American cities. The DVD is also the first full, uncut concert Phish has released on DVD since Live in Vegas (in 2000.)

Sam Myers 1936 - 2006

Sam Myers was born in Laurel, Mississippi on February 19, 1936. He passed away on Monday July 17 at the age of 70, after losing the fight against throat cancer.

It's a real tribute to a musician when they can invoke such strong feelings of love, joy and sadness from not only their music, but from their personality. I can't say I knew him and only recently have I discovered his music, but from the other blogs I've read this week, Sam Myers was a true blues legend. He inspired another generation of musicians when he brought his Mississippi Delta blues to Texas, many years ago.

"Sleeping In The Ground" was written and recorded in 1956 by Sam Myers in Jackson, Mississippi. It's been covered by many other artists since then, most notably by Robert Cray and by Eric Clapton, while with Blind Faith, and later on as a regular blues number in his shows.

Sam Myers joined Anson Funderburgh and The Rockets in 1986 and has since toured the US and the world.

A touching tribute from Blue Lisa, host of Texas Blues Radio on KNON 89.3FM, Dallas

Sam Myer's CD "Coming From the Old School" is still available from his website, while supplies last. All proceeds go to the Southwest Blues Heritage Foundation.

Tom Petty Highway Companion

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers are in full swing of their 2006 North American "Highway Companions Tour".

The band is joined along the way by an exciting list of friends and guests that include Pearl Jam, Trey Anastasio, and The Allman Brothers.

As part of their summer tour they headlined the Bonnaroo Festival on Friday, June 16. They will also appear at the Austin City Limits Festival on Sunday, September 17.

Petty's third solo album, "Highway Companion," will be available on July 25th and is produced by Jeff Lynne with Tom Petty and Mike Campbell.

“Saving Grace” Video Streams: Quicktime - Windows Media

Academy Award-winning director/screenwriter Peter Bogdanovich ("The Last Picture Show," "Paper Moon," "Mask") has started working on a comprehensive feature film/documentary about the band's three-decades-long history. Given unparalleled access to the band, Bogdanovich will intertwine vintage interviews, videos and live performances with special footage that he began shooting late last year.

"We shot New Year's Eve at Mike Campbell's house," said Bogdanovich. "We've gone into the studio with Tom while he did voice-overs for his 'King of The Hill' role, recorded his XM Satellite radio show, we'll be there when he headlines Bonnaroo, and we've already started to conduct new interviews with Tom, the band, with long-time associates, journalists, and other people who have played a role during the past thirty years.
"I want to tell this very American story about a small family of musicians who jumped in a car, left Gainesville and drove cross-country to get into the record business," explained Bogdanovich. "How they did it, what happened to them as a result, how this affected their families and friends, and the impact their music has had on the music industry and on millions of people's lives. We'll take you through it all, the early Shelter Records days, touring with Bob Dylan, the Grammys and other awards, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, working with Johnny Cash in the recording studio, and the Traveling Wilburys." No title or release information has been set.
Over the past thirty years, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers have sold more than 50-million records and been nominated for 16 Grammy Awards. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, the first year they were eligible, and this past December, Green Day's Billy Joe Armstrong presented Petty with the Billboard Century Award at the Billboard Music Awards saying, "If you're going to come up and thank God, thank God for Tom Petty."

In this 2006 season, Petty reprises his ongoing role as "Lucky" on the long-running Fox animated TV series "King of the Hill," and he is in the middle of the second season of his critically acclaimed XM Satellite Radio Show, "Tom Petty's Buried Treasure."

Sammy Hagar is "Livin' It Up" with The Wabos

Sammy Hagar and The Wabos are "Livin' It Up" @ Number One on Classic Rock Radio with a pair of songs from their latest album, available July 25th from Rhino Records!

Full Album Real Player Windows Media (Hi) (Lo) eCard

Sammy Hagar sings about what he knows best on his 15th studio album; parties, beaches, and love. It's safe to say the hedonistic mix Hagar and his band The Wabos conjure up is working. The album's first two singles "Let Me Take You There" and "Sam I Am" both spent more than two months at number one on Classic Rock radio.

11 new studio tracks featuring Sammy Hagar and The Wabos drummer David Lauser, guitarist Vic Johnson, and bassist Mona. The album mixes eclectic styles that range from the hard-driving hits "Sam I Am" and "Mexico," to the roots rocker "The Way We Live," and the country-rock ballad "Halfway." "Livin' It Up" also spotlights two covers; a boozy take on Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women" and country superstar Toby Keith's hit "I Love This Bar."

Hagar's obsession with life where the land ends and the party begins bubbles to the top on several tracks, including "Sailing" and "Livin' On A Coastline". Founder of Cabo Wabo a premium tequila and a cantina in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Hagar sounds at home behind the bar mixing up a love potion on "One Sip," a track he cowrote with contemporary-country hitmaker Kenny Chesney.

This summer Sammy Hagar and The Wabos bring a little taste of Cabo to amphitheatres across America as they tour to support "Livin' It Up." Each show will feature the Cabo Wabo Village complete with bikini girls, body builders, beach volleyball, mariachi bands, Cabo street food vendors, and, of course, a killer bar.

The live shows will include Hagar playing his solo hits with the Wabos followed by a set of Van Halen songs performed by The Other Half, a group featuring Sammy Hagar and Van Halen bassist, Michael Anthony.

Quintessential hard rock lead vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter, Sammy Hagar first rose to fame with the band Montrose before embarking on his solo career. For almost a decade Hagar enjoyed major solo success with a string of albums featuring classic hits such as "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy," "There's Only One Way To Rock," and "I Can't Drive 55." Sammy Hagar then joined Van Halen, and his years as their flamboyant frontman took him to a new level of superstardom, including the Grammy winning album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge.

Third Eye Blind Official Site

A Collection features 19 audio tracks including studio recordings, B-sides, and hard-to-find import tracks. Featuring more than 75 minutes of music recorded between 1997 and 2003, Third Eye Blind: A Collection includes several tracks from the band's multiplatinum 1997 self-titled debut including the mega-hits "Semi-Charmed Life" and "How's It Going To Be.

3EB's hits collection draws six tracks from the band's 1999 platinum sophomore album, Blue. Also included is the full version (with lyrics) of "Slow Motion". Shortly before the album's release, just months after the Columbine High School tragedy, Elektra found the lyrics about teen gunplay too controversial and pulled them from the track. The compilation also features five tracks from the band's most recent studio effort, 2003's Out Of The Vein.

Third Eye Blind made an impressive entrance in 1997, when the San Francisco alternative-rock quartet scored a #1 Modern Rock hit with its first single, "Semi-Charmed Life." 3EB, led by singer Stephan Jenkins who wrote and produced many of their songs with guitarist Tony Fredianelli, drummer Brad Hargreaves, and bassist Arion Salazar, have scored an impressive string of hook-filled hits through the last decade.

Rhino Records brings the band's first career-spanning music collection together July 18th, which also includes liner notes composed by renowned rock writer James Hunter.

Stone Sour hits the road "Come What(ever) May"

Stone Sour lead vocalist Corey Taylor and guitarist James Root (who do double duty in multi-platinum, Grammy winners Slipknot,) bassist Shawn Economaki, guitarist Josh Rand and new drummer Roy Mayorga will return August first with "Come What(ever) May" on Roadrunner Records, their first studio album in four years.

Look for the band to hit the road this summer for the much-anticipated Family Values Tour with Korn and the Deftones, beginning July 27th.

"Reborn" QuickTime (High) (Medium) (Low)

Marking the follow-up to Stone Sour's self-titled debut, which was twice Grammy-nominated and RIAA certified Gold, "Come What(ever) May" was produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver). The resulting album finds the band firing on all cylinders and primed to capture the attention and the hearts of the rock 'n roll masses.

Come What(ever) May" is a sensory experience, encompassing a wide spectrum of emotions. "30/30-150" (which fans can now experience online at roadrunnerrecords.com and stonesour.com) and "Reborn" (video on youtube.com) are bruisers that'll get the blood coursing through your veins; while the first single, "Through Glass," takes up real estate in your brain, thanks to its unforgettable melodic twists and chorus.

Stone Sour expertly craft melody and mix it with rock maelstrom in a way that is uniquely their own.
"As soon as the fans hear this new record, they'll see it's different from anything that we have ever done," says Taylor. "It gives me a chance to do the singing that I love to do, the type of singing that I do when I'm walking around my house." Elaborating on how Stone Sour differs from his work in Slipknot he reveals "With Stone Sour, I loosen up and show more of myself."
Guitarist Rand believes that the diversity of "Come What(ever) May" will be what hooks fans, and what keeps them. "This album's content will fit any mood you may be in," the guitarist says. "If you've had a bad day at work, you could crank 'Hell And Consequences.' If you need a little optimism, you could listen to "Through Glass." If you are feeling depressed, you could listen to "Zzyzx Road."
Guitarist Root, who contends that life itself influenced this album, sees "Come What(ever) May" as a necessary evolution in the band's sound. "We're taking every aspect to the next level. As an artist, no matter what you do, you must evolve. That's very important to me. Some people fear change. I embrace it. This record is a testament to where I am at, musically and spiritually."

Lynyrd Skynyrd & 3 Doors Down on tour

Here's an interesting southern rock tour. One band rocked the 70's and the other the members where born in the 70's. This series of shows are being hailed as the Double Trouble Tour.

It's probably more a testament to Lynyrd Skynyrd's ability to cross generations than anything else, although 3 Doors Down has gathered a following that is sure to have it's share of classic rock listeners.

Shooter Jennings opens on some of these dates. The band rocked at Willie's 4th of July picnic a week ago. But you would expect nothing less from Waylon's son, who's been playing since age five.

Whoever put this tour together did a fine job of casting because these three bands together are really going to tear it up!
