Correction to Christmas'66 post

We really appreciate your comments and feedback. We're only human and make mistakes sometimes, so here's a correction to our post for Christmas '66.

The Beatles' Rubber Soul album was released in 1965. It was Revolver that was released in 1966. Source: beatles.com.

So we'd have to add the following hit songs to the '66 Hit Parade. "Taxman, Eleanor Rigby" and "Good Day Sunshine." Our post was about Christmas in 1966, so it follows that these songs would be all over radio and Billboard charts by then.

What a glaring error on my part. Don't know what I was thinking, but we strive for accuracy here. Thanks Charlie for calling me on it.

Please keep those comments coming. And if you see a stupid mistake, or even a smart one, please let us know.

Please Have A Safe and Happy New Year! Here, There, and Everywhere.

Looking Forward to the New Year 007

(2)007: Looking forward to a new year of new releases, remasters, reissues, mashups, mixdowns and great music. I think my only new year's resolution will be 1024 x 768.

There's nothing like unwrapping a new calendar and browsing through those crisp white pages to see what's coming up around the corner.

New Releases in January:
Kenny Wayne Shepherd's new release Ten Days Out (Blues from the Backroads) will be released January 23rd on DVD and live CD, from Warner Brothers & Reprise Records.
Kenny with Double Trouble's rhythm section, Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon, hit the road with a film crew and capture the real deal in real time.

This year's NAMM Show is January 19th through the 20th in Anaheim, California. The National Association of Music Merchants always put on a great show. And if you're living right, maybe you'll get a factory tour. Last year was a Fender blender.

Number Nine...Number Nine...Tuesday, January 9th, The Royal Mail, the national postal service of the UK, is issuing a specially produced set of stamps to celebrate the cultural contribution and impact of The Beatles' music. The six stamps feature the cover artwork of With The Beatles, Help!, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Abbey Road and Let It Be. "Send me a postcard, drop me a line; mine forevermore..."

February: Grammy Awards; who won, who came in second, no, who's on third? and mistakes in the spotlight. It's all glamour and sparklers, 24-carats in spun gold, but how's the music sound?

March: SXSW Music Conference in Austin - It's been announced that Pete Townshend is this year's keynote speaker for the 2007 South by Southwest Music Conference. But how many bands can you possible see and hear in a weekend?
Does the Dave Clark Five get their induction physical into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?
RIP Denis Payton, who played saxophone and guitar for the DC5, passed away in 2006.

April: New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival - How can you top last year's lineup? With gumbo and dirty rice. The 30th Anniversary Dallas International Guitar Festival and Drumworld III dates have been set for April 20th through the 22nd, at Dallas Market Hall. The Denton Arts & Jazz Festival - The little town with a big sound and UNT's One O'Clock Lab Band. The Jammys Awards - Get your jammies on for your favorite jam bands.

May: Somebody somewhere is having a Memorial Day Festival. Last year's theme was "Don't Mess With Texas." With a number like 007, my theme would be shaken, not stirred. "Right, Mr. Bond?"

June Birthdays: Paul McCartney will hit 65 on June 18. Will he still be a millionaire after court is adjourned? Guitar icon Les Paul June 9th. Todd Rundgren June 22nd.

July: The Montreux Jazz Festival, the 41st edition of this massive music festival, but this year without Ahmet Ertegun and his brother Nesuhi, who were both recognized in 2006 for their outstanding contributions.
Willie's 4th of July Picnic - Willie and the boys ride back into ol' cow town, with the AC cranked all the way up. Who's that following our bus?
The North Texas Rock Rally - Hot wheels grow up and ride for charity. Chrome and leathers optional.

August: Lollapalooza Music Festival - What does Perry and crew have in store this year?
Will Hippiefest stage a comeback in 2007? Our neighbors up north ride the Sturgis Rally.

September: Austin City Limits Music Festival - Promoters, Please put all the good bands on the same stage, so we don't have to miss half our favorites walking between venues. Or you could authorize our golf cart this year?
Farm Aid - Willie, Neil, & John beat the bushels again for charity.
Telluride Blues & Brews Festival - Rocky Mountain High notes and late night blues.
Virgin Music Festival US & UK - What's the schedule this year on either side of the pond? Will it go 'round in circles? Billy Preston's birthday is September 2nd. RIP Billy.

October Birthdays: Chuck Berry, Miles Davis and John Lennon. Halloween usually scares up some good new releases. Or do we have another bumper crop of hot new albums coming at us, just in time to kick off the holiday season?

November: CybersMusic will celebrate our second anniversary on November 28. Now that's something to be thankful for! And speaking of thanks, don't forget the ol' Monty Python Royal Canadian salute to George Harrison this month. He would be 63 this year. RIP George.

December: If we make it through December, leave one hand free for a John Lennon salute for peace on the 8th. RIP John.

Rumored Releases: Zappa plays Zappa Tour DVD (Dweezil hinted it might be available next Spring.)

On Tour: Eric Clapton is taking it to the streets again. Maybe we'll luck out and J.J. Cale will surprise us as a guest star on some of EC's tour dates? Tulsa's probably sold out already.

James Brown A Lifetime Of Soul

James Brown was called by many names, but a national treasure said it all. He was the master of funk; although his flamboyant style will be missed, his influence will live forever.

Some others said it best...

Fifty years after recording his first hit song, the Hardest Working Man in Show Business has played his final encore. James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, died early Christmas morning after a brief bout with pneumonia in an Atlanta hospital. – Source: James Sullivan, Rolling Stone Magazine

He had more than 119 charting singles and recorded over 50 albums, was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and received a lifetime achievement award from the Grammys in 1992. He even played the role of a manic preacher in the hit 1980 movie "The Blues Brothers." - Source: Reuters

Along with Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and a handful of others, James Brown was one of the major musical influences of the past 50 years. At least one generation idolized him, and sometimes openly copied him. His rapid-footed dancing inspired Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson among others.

If Brown's claim to the invention of soul can be challenged by fans of Ray Charles and Sam Cooke, then his rights to the genres of rap, disco and funk are beyond question. He was to rhythm and dance music what Dylan was to lyrics: the unchallenged popular innovator.

His hit singles include such classics as "Out of Sight," "(Get Up I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine," "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and "Say It Out Loud -- I'm Black and I'm Proud," a landmark 1968 statement of racial pride.

He won a Grammy award for lifetime achievement in 1992, as well as Grammys in 1965 for "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" (best R&B recording) and for "Living In America" in 1987 (best R&B vocal performance, male.) He was one of the initial artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, along with Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and other founding fathers. - Source: Variety

After James Brown had his first R&B hit with "Please, Please, Please" in 1956, he went on a frenzy of cross-country tours and concerts and earned the nickname "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business." Brown would routinely lose two or three pounds each time he performed and kept his furious concert schedule in his later years, even as he fought prostate cancer. He always gave his all to his fans. - Source: myTelus.com

Is It Really RockDotRock?

This is so bad that you're either going to love it or hate it. While it appeals to my warped sense of humor, I can't say much for the lyrics or the music. But this is supposed to be rock and roll, so style means more than content. The band is RockDotRock. The sponsor is Symantec. The product is Norton Confidential.

It is interesting from a marketing standpoint...in this compressed time space continuum we live in today, no one has time for a sales pitch. So here comes viral marketing morphed into something called an adverband. With the goal of creating awareness for their sponsor through a rock and roll strategy, with the usual pre-fab-four packaging and hype machine. MP3's from an EP, Videos, and of course, an online presence, complete with a fabricated story line that incorporates a real product for sale.

The best part of this over hyped "project" is the You Think You Know Rock? Contest. You have to identify well known rock stars by their stage moves to win, but it's easier than you think. I got 4 out of 6!

The writing is simply awful. It's obvious it's done by a marketing agency, whose sole purpose is to shamelessly promote Symantec's Norton Confidential software. At least Spinal Tap had original parody ideas, and their song and album titles were funny. And their videos were hysterical. RockDotRock is more like a bad 80's hair band that's sold out to the big bad corporate world. Sounds perfect for TV.

So don't take it too seriously. But it does make us wonder which direction this might take off on. It sure gives a new definition to the term "viral marketing." But what else would you expect from an anti-virus and online security company?

Video “Is It Really You (I'’m Talkin To?)

MP3's from their Confidential EP:

Actually, I did something like this years ago, only my idea was a Metallica-clone-thrash-metal band called NTLinka (pronounced Net-Linka) that was hired by Microsoft to promote the (new at the time) Windows NT. Their "hit" song was "So NT You" with the flip single "Dock The Taskbar." Hey, it was just for fun. Not to be taken seriously. Think spoof and parody. It sure worked for Weird Al.

Ramblings on my mind for Thursday December 21st, 2006

Eric Clapton and J.J. Cale talk about their new album The Road to Escondido...New interviews are online at www.whereseric.com/news and at the AT&T Blue Room - goto Interviews on this page...blueroom.att.com/mainstage/index.php.

Aaron Lewis with Staind talks about their new greatest hits album The Singles: 1996-2006... @ the AT&T Blue Room - goto Interviews on this page...blueroom.att.com/mainstage/index.php.

I've stumbled (again) across a couple of cool new music blogs...I had to add 'em both to my RSS reader when they mentioned Neil Young's new Archive Album Release Series and his biography Shakey, which is a national bestseller...
An Aquarium Drunkard aquariumdrunk.blogspot.com/
Rambling Canuck ramblingcanuck.blogspot.com/

I mention Mickey Hart here for a couple of reasons, but mainly because he's so much more than just a drummer. This past year he toured with both his Planet Drum project, and his Rhythm Devils Tour. If you're into percussion, then you must own his books Planet Drum and Drumming at the Edge of Magic...www.mickeyhart.net/Pages/news.html

Speaking of drummers, when did they get this good, this young?
4 years old: www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE_PFpWPQ5Y
7 years old: www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8cvKImVadE
12 years old: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvZ39hE3PRs

Some other interesting Google Videos:
John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Mitch Mitchell in the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus...video.google.com/videoplay?docid=912375689786125846&sourceid=searchfeed

John Lennon and Bob Dylan take a backseat... video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3178373884721062371&sourceid=searchfeed

Oh, and finally, Keith Richards just celebrated his 63rd birthday. Is it just me, or does he look alot older than that ten years ago? Can I find any picutres online of him without a cigarette dangling from his mouth? Will AARP sponsor the next Stones tour and will it be called the Steel Wheelchair tour? Nevermind these random questions, Keith wouldn't care. The most recent Stones tour grossed about half a billion dollars.

Yeah, billion with a B. It's only rock and roll, but I like it.

CybersMusic 2nd Annual Christmas list

I can't help but think of Christmas music and it seems divided into two catagories. The traditional songs I grew up listening to, that give me that warm fuzzy feeling of home and hearth. Then there's the newer contemporary songs by some of my favorite artists and bands. It's the lyrics that really make these great, because we all know the music can be really cheesy at times.

"A Christmas Song" Jethro Tull ~ Christmas Spirit is not what you drink.

"Please Come Home For Christmas" The Eagles or Aaron Neville, both versions are excellent, but Charles Brown is the original.

"I Believe In Father Christmas" by Greg Lake (of Emerson Lake & Palmer) ~ this song was redone years later by rockers Honeymoon Suite, which appeared on a Warner Brothers compilation CD Winter Warnerland.

"Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" - John Lennon's single Christmas song, but he only needed one to make his point..."A very Merry Christmas, And a Happy New Year, Let's hope it's a good one, Without any fear."

"Silent Night" Dr. John - The good doctor remakes this classic into a real celebration of joy.

"Father Christmas" The Kinks ~ I didn't know who this was at first, but I love the Kinks.

"Snoopy's Christmas" The Royal Guardsmen ~ The classic tale of Snoopy vs. the Red Baron..."Christmas Bells ringing through the land, bringing peace to all the world and good will to men."

"Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy" David Bowie & Bing Crosby ~ priceless celebrity Christmas duet. It was a real surprise when it first came out, because these two guys seem to exist at the opposite ends of the universe. Not so.

"Oiche Chiun" Enya ~ from Irish group Clannad, Enya sings a haunting rendition of this classic Christmas carol "Silent Night" in Gaelic.

"Baby, It's Cold Outside" - Ray Charles & Betty Carter - Great story line with big band instrumental breaks.

"Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" - Brenda Lee - This always makes me feel like a kid peeking under the tree.

"The Christmas Song" - Natalie Cole - Her silky smooth voice and lush orchestration make this uplifting, warm & bright.

"Wonderful Christmastime" - Paul McCartney - Macca's one and only Christmas song.

"Blue Christmas" Elvis ~ a timeless classic by The King.

"All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" Dread Zeppelin ~ Elvis meets Led Zeppelin reggae mashup, with lyrics from Spike Jones' classic.

"Santa Claus Go Straight To The Ghetto" ~ James Brown funks up the holiday spirit.

"All I Want for Christmas" Timbuk 3 ~ Pat & Barbara update this song in their own "Austin-tageous" way.

"Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy" Buck Owens ~ Christmastime from the kids' point of view.

"Merry Christmas From The Family" Robert Earl Keen ~ Texas kinfolk git together fer a holiday in the country.

from the Atlantic album I Am Santa Claus; "O Little Town Of Bethlehem" sung to the tune of "The House Of The Rising Sun" and "Walkin' Round In Women's Underwear" (sung to the tune of "Winter Wonderland") by comedy music group Bob Rivers & Twisted Radio, one of my favorite parodies.

"Santa Claus And His Old Lady" Cheech & Chong ~ one of my favorite seasonal comedy routines. These guys always cracked me up.

"Deck the Halls" R.E.M. - The instrumentation really make this one stand out.

"It's Just Not Christmas" The Malibooz ~ from their album A Malibu Kind Of Christmas, sounds alot like the Beach Boys.

"Little Saint Nick" Beach Boys ~ a seasonal favorite you can sink your toes into.

"Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" The Texas Tornados ~ from the Warner Brothers' album A Christmas Tradition Volume III, Doug Sahm, Augie Meyers, Freddy Fender & Flaco Jimenez remake this Christmas classic.

"How Do I Wrap My Heart Up For Christmas" Randy Travis ~ from Warner Brothers' compilation album Winter WarnerLand. "Pretty bows and ribbons don't fit the gift I'm giving; your loving arms will have to do."

"What Child Is This" - Violinist and composer Mark O'Connor instrumental classic.

An album worth mentioning: A Charlie Brown Christmas ~ Vince Guaraldi's Original Soundtrack Recording of the CBS Television Special. An annual favorite TV special; I never tire of watching Linus recite the real meaning of Christmas. After all, 'tis the season for the children.

Concert Review: Zappa plays Zappa ~ Tour de Frank

Zappa plays Zappa is a three hour concert extravaganza of Frank Zappa music, played and conducted by his son Dweezil, with a amazing band of stellar players and Zappa alumni.

Dweezil and the band were in top form last Saturday night at the Nokia Theatre in Grand Prairie. DZ is passing Frank's music along to the next generation and doing a masterful job in the process.

Terry Bozzio is an outrageous drummer. His song introductions were great. Napoleon Murphy Brock was entertaining with his animated vocals and dance steps. And Steve Vai's guitar work was amazing as always.

I've always known about Zappa's music, but the first time I heard Weasels Ripped My Flesh, I just didn't get it. My musician friend summed it up..."I think we've matured enough to finally understand this music." So, thanks, Dweezil! Now I'm geared up to add some of those 75 Zappa albums to my collection.

I'll definitely buy the live DVD of the show, when it's available. And it sounds like the momentum may just keep this tour going again next year, so I'll have to watch for them to return. It's just too good to miss.

The band is blogging about the tour from the road.
Catch up with 'em at www.zappaplayszappa.com/tourlog/index.php.

Out of 40 songs in the official setlist, my feeble brain could only recall the following...
"Inca Roads"
"I'm The Slime"
"Peaches En Regalia"
"Don't Eat The Yellow Snow"
"Montana"
"Sofa"
"The Torture Never Stops"
"Pound For A Brown"
"I'm So Cute" featuring Terry Bozzio
"Punky's Whips" featuring Terry Bozzio
"The Black Page" parts I & II featuring Terry Bozzio
"More Trouble Every Day" featuring Steve Vai

The Band:
Dweezil Zappa: guitar
Scheila Gonzalez: flute, saxophone, keyboards, vocals
Aaron Arntz: keyboards, vocals, trumpet
Jamie Kime: guitar
Pete Griffin: bass
Billy Hulting: marimba, mallets & percussion
Joe Travers: drums, vocals & Vaultmeister for the Zappa Family Trust

Special Guests:
Napoleon Murphy Brock: vocals, saxophone & flute
Steve Vai: guitar
Terry Bozzio: drums

Frank Zappa CDs Everyone Should Own:
(in no particular order - a Listmania list by Ray Holmes on amazon.com)

The latest Frank Zappa album out is Trance-Fusion on Zappa Records.

Wilson Pickett "In The Midnight Hour"
Otis Redding "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay"

Led Zeppelin "Stairway To Heaven"
Rolling Stones "Brown Sugar"
Crosby Stills Nash and Young "Woodstock"

Music Icon Ahmet Ertegun 1923 - 2006

Music pioneer, visionary, record label founder, jazz and R&B collector and producer, Ahmet Ertegun has passed away at age 83 from a head injury. A rock and roll fan until the very end, he slipped and fell at a Rolling Stones concert in October, and later slipped into a coma.

He was a giant in the music business. He and a friend Herb Abramson founded Atlantic Records in 1947 and was instrumental in the careers of early R&B artists Ruth Brown, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, and later on helped usher in the British Invasion with Cream, Led Zeppelin, Yes and the Rolling Stones.

Ahmet Ertegun has signed, produced and worked with other such notable artists as Wilson Pickett, The Drifters, Roberta Flack, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Vanilla Fudge, Eric Clapton, Bad Company,The Allman Brothers, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Bette Midler and Iron Butterfly.

Ahmet was honored this past June at the 40th Montreux Jazz Festival with an all star concert featuring many of the artists he has worked with over the years. A Brutal Christmas - The Season in Chaos

Now that we're into the 12 days of Christmas, it's time to unleash the Christmas music. When I think of this holiday season, I don't usually think of the word brutal, unless we're talking about the crowds in the shopping malls.

Thanks to my friend at work Mark, who shared this with me today. This is the funniest, yet absolutely worst idea ever! OMG, this redefines bad. Christmas songs, motorbated into death metal.

Well these eleven bands got together to cover their favorite Christmas songs and just about beat them to death. Death metal, that is. The album is A Brutal Christmas - The Season In Chaos.

Track four "Coventry Carol" is like, WTF? You call this Christmas music?!? This stuff makes me feel psychotic even when I'm straight. At least this title has the word Carol in it.

"Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence..." now that's a nice Christmas theme, isn't it?

I've never heard "The Little Drummer Boy" quite like this version. Tortured indeed.

The Christmas classics will never be the same again. My throat hurts after just listening to the vocals. Never mind the speed metal drumming and crunchy wall of guitars, or the throat ripping vocals.

Gotta love some of these names, too. Royal Anguish. Yep, it sure was. Tortured Conscience. More like tortured ears. Archer; Frank's Enemy; Hearken; EverSincEve; Faithbomb; Pure Defiance. Mmm, more egg nog. Throw another log on the fire. Crank it up to 11!

An amazon product review says "not for the faint of heart."
Aptly titled...A Brutal Christmas - The Season In Chaos. It could turn your red and green, black and blue.

Track Listing:
1. Angels We Have Heard on High by Archer
2. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen by Kekal
3. Mary Did You Know? by Royal Anguish
4. Coventry Carol (Lully Lullay) by Frank's Enemy
5. Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silcen/O Come Emmanuel by Frost Like Ashes
6. The Little Drummer Boy by Tortured Conscience
7. O Come All Ye Faithful by Hearken
8. Child Messiah by Death Requisite
9. O Holy Night by EverSINcEve
10. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlement (take 2) by Faithbomb
11. Joy To The World by Pure Defiance

10 Days Out Blues from the Backroads

Kenny Wayne Shepherd is joined by longtime collaborator and vocalist Noah Hunt, and Double Trouble's rhythm section, Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon, as they seek out some of America's best known authentic blues artists in their own backyards.

During their ten day journey, they jammed and recorded with B.B. King, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Honeyboy Edwards and the remaining members of Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters' bands.

Media Player ~ Video Trailer

They took along a film crew, a portable recording studio and producer Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads) and put together this incredible documentary...10 Days Out, Blues from the Backroads. The DVD culminates with a once in a lifetime performance at the Church at Blue Heaven Studios in Salina, Kansas. The goal was to produce intimate recordings in native settings to keep it authentic. Going back to the roots of rock and roll, and where the blues were born and raised.
“What happened is what you hear,” says Shepherd, “We kept it as real as possible.”
Kenny Wayne Shepherd's new release Ten Days Out (Blues from the Backroads) will be released January 23rd on DVD and live CD, from Warner Brothers & Reprise Records.

Tuesday Ramblings

Online...Dave at About: Classic Rock talks about the Grammies, and makes a point that it all boils down to public relations now, instead of artistic talent.

Good point, well taken, Dave. It's ironic, too, because every year after the Grammies, album sales increase for those winners. Sad fact is that a large part of the American public mistakenly interpret Grammy awards as endorsements of talent. Ask anyone who's ever worked in a record store, especially around the holidays. Welcome to the PR machine at work.

On the road...Foreigner is wrapping up their tour dates for Christmas...
Dec. 13 Grapevine, TX @ Glass Cactus
Dec. 16 Norman, OK @ Riverwind Casino
Dec. 18 Beaumont, TX @ Beaumont Civic Center
Dec. 31 Niagra Falls, ON @ Queen Victoria Park

The band's current line up features vocalist Kelly Hansen, drummer Jason Bonham, Jeff Pilson, Jeff Jacobs, Tom Gimbel and founding member Mick Jones on guitar.

Foreigner's debut album is one of their best. Great studio band, but they never sounded good live. I've seen them twice in concert, and both times were disappointing.

Rhapsody Ads Eric Clapton

The TV commercial for the Sansa Rhapsody MP3 player caught my attention because it features Eric Clapton. The folks behind Rhapsody Online service may have captured certain market share by getting this major artist endorsement. Although he doesn't say anything specific about their player, the ad draws interest, especially for EC fans.

Plus his new release album with J.J. Cale is featured, The Road To Escondido, which is a smart marketing ploy; it's obvious the competitors are out to kill the iPod. The Rhapsody website also has a cool looking timeline where you can follow Clapton's musical journey.

The Sansa Rhapsody player adds some cool features, like the voice recorder and built-in microphone and FM tuner. Like the iPod, you can purchase various storage sizes; 2, 4 & 8GB (on the Sandisk version.) The large 1.8 inch screen and control wheel give it a friendly user interface, and remind me of Microsoft's Zune player, which has added WiFi connectivity so users can swap songs and photos. They both play video, which is now required functionality.

It's nice that the Rhapsody comes preloaded with hundreds of songs, but that can be viewed as a nuisance, like shareware pre-installed on a new computer. Just how many of those "freebies" will last once you upload and arrange your songs into personal playlists? I'm not too fond of the subscription only service, which costs $14.99 a month and synchs "channels" of music based on your preferences.

Having received an iPod nano earlier this year, I'm not about to spend big money for another player. I'd much rather invest in making my current music collection mobile, adding new songs, and maybe purchasing one of the cool add on external speakers. I'm currently using iTunes, but always looking for a better music service. I wouldn't really mind paying a monthly fee for a good subscription service, if I could just find the classic songs I want.
