Susan Cagle - The Subway Recordings

Now here's a new artist who gives new meaning to the term, underground sensation. 25 year old Susan Cagle started singing and playing in New York subways after 9/11, as a way to reach out to fellow New Yorkers.

Her natural talent connected with people in a positive way and in the years that followed, and she recorded her own album called The Subway Recordings. Coming from a family of ten brothers and sisters, their band is literally a family affair. They've sold 30,000 copies of their hand made album, and came to the attention of Jay Levine, and was then signed to Columbia records.

Now Susan Cagle is recording in a real studio and is set to appear at the Video Music Awards's this year in support of her debut album The Subway Recordings. A taped concert in the subway will be available on MTV/Overdrive for the VMA's.

New Orleans - The Big Easy One Year After The Big One

It's been a year since Katrina took it's toll on New Orleans, and it's all over the news. But this is a music blog, so I wanted to highlight some of the activity surrounding this one year anniversary...

Ivan Neville and Stevie Wonder join Wynton Marsalis, Dr. John and Yolanda Adams in a live concert billed as "New Orleans: Rebuilding the Soul of America...One Year Later." Proceeds benefiting the Rebuild The Soul Of America (RSOA) Charitable Trust. This is an amazing three day group of events.

Sources: Billboard & Official Website www.celebratejazz.org

On September 20th, 2005, Madison Square Garden hosted a concert for the Gulf Coast to support the long-term relief and rebuilding efforts following Hurricane Katrina. The DVD 'From The Big Apple To The Big Easy: The Concert For New Orleans' is available on Rhino Entertainment, and features New Orleans musical legends Allen Toussaint, Buckwheat Zydeco, the Neville Brothers, and the Meters onstage with many of music's biggest names like Cyndi Lauper, Elton John, Elvis Costello, Jimmy Buffett, John Fogerty, and Lenny Kravitz.

Video of "Amazing Grace" by The Neville Brothers and The Meters!

Tipitina's Foundation delivers a half million dollars of new instruments to New Orleans schools. This website satchmo.com has a wealth of music information about Louisiana and New Orleans.
Source: www.satchmo.com

But the most genuine, heartfelt news is from New Orleans herself, The Times-Picayune.

And of course, no music blog post would be complete without a link to the official site for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, which takes place April 27 thru May 6 in 2007.

Bonnie does it Raitt

We posted about this album a week before it was released, but since then I've had the pleasure of actually viewing the DVD. So I've just got to share a little review with you. If you're a Bonnie Raitt fan, this concert is a must for your collection.

I'm amazed at how live shows are increasingly becoming so much better...the sound, mixing, and video editing is really great on this DVD. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have a state-of-the-art stage, where VH1 filmed this show.

Even better, once you've seen the DVD, then pop the companion CD into your car stereo. You can just see Bonnie singing duets with all her guest artists, Ben Harper, Norah Jones, Alison Krauss and trading guitar licks with Keb'Mo'.

My favorite tracks are probably "Something To Talk About," "Love Letter" (with Keb Mo')and a wonderful encore of "Love Sneakin' Up On You" with everybody on stage together. Plus a cut from her latest studio album, Souls Alike, "God Was In The Water."

Capitol gives us a taste of several videos on their eCard, plus a full length track of "Two Lights In The Nighttime" featuring Ben Harper doing a killer slide lead on lap steel.

The Beatles - Candelstick Park - 1966

It was forty years ago that the Beatles played their last live concert. It was held at Candlestick Park in San Francisco on August 29th, 1966. The show only lasted 35 minutes, but was important from the standpoint that it was final public concert by the Beatles, ending their famous but frantic world tour. Their last public appearance in England was at Wembley Stadium on May 1st, 1965.

By now the story is a familiar one. The group was tired of touring and not being able to hear themselves sing. They had honed their studio skills to the point where their talent and creativity were taking leaps and bounds ahead of the times. Thus began a new chapter in their recording career, as demonstrated by their next albums Magical Mystery Tour and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in '67.

The Essential Alice In Chains CD Collection

One of the pleasures of working with music is the thrill of discovery. Case in point is this new collection from Alice In Chains. I've enjoyed their songs "Man In The Box" and "No Excuses" for years, but never realized it was them until this review. Both videos are on the Video Jukebox.
I guess that's the downside to listening to the radio...you never know who you're listening to.

Alice In Chains celebrates it's 20th anniversary next year. What better way to acknowledge the band's musical legacy than tracking through their best material?

The Essential Alice In Chains offers 28 tracks culled from all four of the band's original albums...Facelift (1990,) Dirt (1992,) the self-titled Alice In Chains (1995,) and the live (mostly acoustic) MTV Unplugged (1996.) It also features material from their two EP's, SAP (1992) and Jar Of Flies (1994.) You also get both remixes from their two songs on the Last Action Hero soundtrack album (1993.)

The Essential Collection album becomes available September 5th...from Columbia/Legacy/Sony/BMG Entertainment.

Now, ten years after their last concert, Alice In Chains is touring the US club circuit. Then it's on to a five month tour of the UK and Europe.

Under the Influence of Giants

Here's an interesting mix of musical styles. I discovered this band Under the Influence of Giants while browsing recent new releases. Their self-titled release just came out on Island Records; a label well known for extremely diverse artists.

UTIOG has got rhythm ala Inxs, vocals ala Hall & Oates, harmonies like the Bee Gees, and the complex production of 10cc and Sweet. Throw in a pinch of Genesis at Muscle Shoals for really tight horns. This a definitely an album for the headphones. Under the Influence of Giants will make you want to dance your ass off.

Standout tracks: "Stay Illogical, Heaven Is Full and Against All Odds."

The Black Crowes - lost and found

The 'Lost Crowes' finally land on CD!

The Black Crowes recorded two albums that never saw the light of day, until now. 'Tall' (in 1993,) and 'Band' (recorded in 1997,) have been remixed into a deluxe double disc set titled 'The Lost Crowes.' The compilation will be available August 29th.

At the same time Rhino Home Video will release
'Who Killed That Bird Out On Your Window Sill.'
It's a remastered and expanded version of the video on DVD that features live performances, interviews, backstage and studio footage, videos from the group’s first two albums, and additional bonus features.

The 'Band' sessions feature ten songs including an alternate version of the B-side "Peace Anyway," plus "If It Ever Stops Raining," the title-track to the 1999 album 'By Your Side.' After the band came off the road headlining the Furthur Festival, they went into a Nashville studio to record songs for a planned follow-up to 1996’s acclaimed 'Three Snakes & One Charm.'

The 'Tall' Sessions contain a total of sixteen unreleased tracks from the band's emotional L.A. days. Vocalist Chris Robinson, guitarists Rich Robinson and Marc Ford, drummer Steve Gorman, bassist Johnny Colt, and keyboardist Ed Harsch were working on the follow-up to 'Southern Harmony And Musical Companion' in the fall of 1993, when they recorded more than thirty songs at Conway Studios in Los Angeles. That creative period turned into the 1994 album, 'Amorica.'

Paul Stacey has remixed all of the music on 'The Lost Crowes,' which also includes liner notes spotlighting the stories behind these legendary lost sessions as told by the brothers Robinson.

Hey Hey It's The Monkees

Hey, Hey, it was forty years ago that The Monkees walked down our street and into our hearts. Mike Nesmith, Davy Jones, Peter Tork and Micky Dolenz made their zany television debut in 1966, and sold more than 16 million copies of their first two albums.

Rhino Entertainment has just released deluxe, double CD sets of The Monkees '66 debut and '67 follow-up albums as limited-edition reissues. Both of these number one hit albums have been remastered and expanded and feature stereo and mono mixes of the original releases, rare alternate versions of album tracks, as well as previously unreleased tracks.

My favorite from this era has to be their top twenty hit "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone." It was right up there near the top of every garage band's hit parade, along with the Stones "19th Nervous Breakdown" and the Kinks "You Really Got Me!"

Hey, dig our groovy eCard!

Did You Know..?

The Monkees TV sitcom was designed to mimic the madcap spirit of The Beatles "A Hard Day's Night," and earned an Emmy award in 1967 for "Outstanding Comedy Series."

"Last Train To Clarksville" was the band's first number one hit single.

Neil Diamond wrote their number one single "I'm A Believer."

Michael Nesmith, a native Texan, was the only real musician in the group. He went on to pioneer what we now know as music videos, and has a successful solo career. Check out what Nez is up to lately at his videoranch.com.

Gin Blossoms return with Major Lodge Victory

It's been ten years since their last album.

The Gin Blossoms are back with "Major Lodge Victory" on Hybrid Recordings.

They still sound great to me...the jangly guitars...the soaring vocals...the quick tempos. Yeah, it's the same formula they used for their previous hits like "Follow You Down" and "Hey Jealousy," but why change when you're obviously on the right tracks?

"Major Lodge Victory" hooked me right away with the Gins great harmonies. It's like a rush of fresh cool air when you're coming inside from a hot summer day.

Danny Wilde of The Rembrandts did some mixing and producing, and has co-written several tracks, including "Fool For The Taking." What a great pairing of pop song craft masters! I've long been a Rembrandts fan. Rhino has recently released their Greatest Hits CD.

Gin Blossoms will open for Hootie & the Blowfish August 18th at the Family Circle Magazine Stadium in Charleston, SC. Other tour dates below:

Two Sides of the Moon

Sanctuary Records and Castle Music have re-released the one and only solo album by Keith Moon, recorded in 1975. It's been expanded from it's original ten songs into a double CD of fifty tracks and outtakes. This is one CD where the credits are definitely worth reading.

The list of guest artists reads like a who's who of rock and roll...Ringo Starr, Rick Nelson, Harry Nilsson, David Bowie, Danny Kootch, Spencer Davis , Joe Walsh, Jesse Ed Davis, Ron Wood, Patti Quatro, John Sebastian, Dick Dale, Bobby Keys, Jay Ferguson, David Foster, Klaus Voorman, Jimmie Randall, Jim Keltner, (girl group) Fanny, Jay Ferguson, and Flo and Eddie.

Produced by Steve Cropper, Skip Taylor, and John Stronach, and digitally remastered by Jon Astley and Andy Macpherson. Mal Evans handled much of the original seventies production.

Noteworthy tracks are the Who classic "The Kids Are Alright", and the Beach Boys ballad "Don't Worry Baby."

Premier Percussion Ltd. is also producing a limited edition of the famous "Pictures of Lily" drumkit that the company made for Keith Moon in 1967. Most of his original kit is stored at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Gene Simmons Family Jewels

Gene Simmons: Family Jewels debuts on the A&E channel this week. Their website aetv.com lists Monday August 7th and Wednesday the 9th, at 9 and 10pm, ET, so you better check local listings to be sure.

Just imagine the demonic fire-breathing bass player from KISS as a regular dad, trying to raise his two kids, Nick and Sophie, with life partner Shannon Tweed. The weekly series says it will reveal another side of Gene Simmons that the public has never seen. Hmmm, does this remind you of any other so called family show with a rock star?

The Theme Song for the show is posted on aetv.com:

This is the Gene Simmons Family Jewels.
When God made me he broke all the rules.

I rock all day, I roll all night
You wish you were me, you know I'm right.

And that's Shannon my beauty queen,
the finest girl I have ever seen

We ain't your next door family.

Lollapalooza music festival

The Lollapalooza music festival starts today and runs this weekend, August 4th through the 6th, taking place in Chicago's Grant Park this year.

There's 130 bands on eight stages. That's quite a lineup of bands and artists. It kind of reminds me of the Austin City Limits music festival...
3 days, 8 stages and 130 bands.

But Lollapalooza is so much more than just a music festival...there's Mindfield, where you can win prizes, see short films or enjoy comedy, take part in gaming, and there's even a DJ dance party at night. The kidz area features all kinds of family oriented music, a hip-hop workshop, dance floor, hair and makeup styling and even a rock and roll petting zoo. And of course, Causapalooza provides a special place where you can explore a host of charitable organizations and their causes.

Here's just a few of the bands and artists appearing this year:
Ben Kweller
Blues Traveler
Death Cab For Cutie
My Morning Jacket
Queens of the Stone Age
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Reverend Horton Heat
The Flaming Lips
Violent Femmes
Ween
Wilco

LollaArtistRadio @ freshtracksmusic.com

Perry Farrell (Jane's Addiction; Porno for Pyros) created Lollapalooza in 1991. The "lifestyle festival" has become known for its musical diversity and recognized for providing a platform for environmental and human rights causes.

A three day pass costs $150. One day pass is $65. The website says that's about a dollar a band. What a deal.

John Mayer's Continuum

John Mayer seems to be everywhere lately, and for good reason.

He's got two new projects making waves across the country, plus an almost non-stop tour and guest spots with other major acts.

The John Mayer Trio's first live album "Try!" features eleven tracks from their 2005 tour, spotlighting the awesome rhythm section of drummer Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino on bass.

John Mayer's next album "Continuum" is scheduled for release on September 12th. It's his third studio album that now brings the Grammy winning artist full circle from pop, rock, blues and even soul. It's been two years since his last CD "Heavier Things," and you can sense the maturity in his songwriting.
Mayer said he enjoys getting some one-on-one time with his own songs before anyone gets to hear them. "That's kind of like my freedom,” Mayer said. “It's kind of like the part for me that's really great because you know, when everybody is sharing my music, and that's the goal, is that as many people as possible listen to this music that I make. It's really comforting for me to listen to the stuff that people haven't heard yet. That's mine still. That's like my friend."

Mayer shares production credit with Steve Jordan on the album. "Continuum" features “I Don’t Trust Myself With Loving You,” “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room,” a soulful “I’m Gonna Find Another You," and a blazing cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Bold As Love.” He reworked his Trio tunes “Vultures” and “Gravity” for the studio with drummer Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino on bass.

A co-headlining tour with Sheryl Crow starts on August 24th; then The John Mayer Trio picks up even more tour dates starting September 6th in San Francisco. Mayer will also open up a few shows for the Rolling Stones and Tom Petty this fall.

Mayer’s first single, “Waiting On The World To Change,” is already on the radio and is available on iTunes. From Aware/Columbia Records.

I want my GPTV

It's the first internet based TV station for guitar players; www.guitarplayertv.com.

They're featuring some great players too...Dweezil Zappa, Zakk Wylde, Larry Carlton, and Roger McGuinn, among others. There's video guitar lessons, exclusive interviews, live performances, recording tips, and info on new gear. 24/7...online and interactive.

There's also an online TV station for bass players; www.bassplayer.tv.
Same great content, and featuring Flea, Paul Jackson, Steve Bailey, and my favorite, Bill Clements. He can play more notes with one hand than I can with two.

Check out his video lesson here...you've really got to see this guy play!

The partnership between Guitar Player magazine, Music Player Network and TrueFire TV will soon debut two more online TV channels...Keyboard TV and EQ TV.
