Sam Myers 1936 - 2006

Sam Myers was born in Laurel, Mississippi on February 19, 1936. He passed away on Monday July 17 at the age of 70, after losing the fight against throat cancer.

It's a real tribute to a musician when they can invoke such strong feelings of love, joy and sadness from not only their music, but from their personality. I can't say I knew him and only recently have I discovered his music, but from the other blogs I've read this week, Sam Myers was a true blues legend. He inspired another generation of musicians when he brought his Mississippi Delta blues to Texas, many years ago.

"Sleeping In The Ground" was written and recorded in 1956 by Sam Myers in Jackson, Mississippi. It's been covered by many other artists since then, most notably by Robert Cray and by Eric Clapton, while with Blind Faith, and later on as a regular blues number in his shows.

Sam Myers joined Anson Funderburgh and The Rockets in 1986 and has since toured the US and the world.

A touching tribute from Blue Lisa, host of Texas Blues Radio on KNON 89.3FM, Dallas

Sam Myer's CD "Coming From the Old School" is still available from his website, while supplies last. All proceeds go to the Southwest Blues Heritage Foundation.
