Review: Cream Reunion @ Royal Albert Hall May 2005

Recorded at the famous Royal Albert Hall, this DVD captures the virtuoso reunion of Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker as they make an electrifying return as THE power trio of the sixties.

Recorded May 2nd through the 6th in 2005, the real surprise in this package is not the hits we all know, but the songs I'd either forgotten or never really paid attention to.

"Sitting On Top Of The World" was a great slow blues number with Bruce doubling on harmonica. "Sleepy Time Time," The minor key and Bruce and Clapton's vocalizing on the chorus makes this track a real gem. "Outside Woman Blues" where Clapton takes lead vocals away from Bruce.

"Toad" Ginger Baker's extended double bass drum solo is incredible; he doesn't miss a lick, like the band has been playing all these many years without a break. He looks so old and fragile, but proves without a doubt that he's neither. His DW drumkit has a big powerful sound. Baker takes on lead vocals with "Pressed Rat and Warthog," I had totally forgotten this strange tune.

You can see the joy in their faces and hear it in their performances. To see and hear these three guys play together like it was only yesterday instead of forty years ago...well, that's why they were known as the first rock supergroup. Ironic really, since Baker considers himself more of a jazz player, along with Bruce, with Clapton heavily into the blues. But it's sheer magic, because the Cream always rises to the top.

So later on I watched Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival on DVD, because Eric said he was inspired to record a new album with J.J. Cale, after playing together in Dallas in June of 2004. This 2-disc DVD set doesn't cover nearly enough of this incredible 3-day guitar festival, but it gives you the overall experience of the wealth of six-string talent that was there. Tickets to all three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday were available, but I waited until Sunday to go to the headlining concert. It really was a once-in-a-lifetime-event with the incredible guest list of great artists that performed that weekend at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas.
