Sam Moore's Overnight Sensational

Soul Man Sam Moore's Overnight Sensational

'Overnight Sensational' is the new solo album from R&B legend Sam Moore. The title is really ironic, as this album project has actually spanned 25 years. But finally it has just been released on Rhino Records.

Once word got out that Sam Moore was in the studio recording, friends and fellow musicians started lining up for a chance to work with him.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Sam about his new album, of which he remarked "it was alot of fun."

It's an amazingly diverse album with material ranging from pop to soul to R&B to gospel to country. How could it not be diverse with this lineup? Jon Bon Jovi, Bekka Bramlett, Mariah Carey, Eric Clapton, Nikka Costa, Sheila E., Fantasia, Billy F. Gibbons, Vince Gill, Van Hunt, Billy Preston, Robert Randolph, Paul Rodgers, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Travis Tritt, BeBe Winans, Steve Winwood, Wynonna, and Zucchero.

One of Sam's favorite tracks is "If I Had No Loot" in which he sings with Van Hunt and Nikka Costa, featuring guitar by special guest Billy Gibbons...the song is highly danceable and will probably see a club mix in the future. I dare you to try to sit still during any of these tunes!

Other standout tracks are:
"None Of Us Are Free" a duet with Sting featuring Sheila E. on percussion;
"Ain't No Love" a duet with Steve Winwood (also on Hammond organ) written by Paul Carrack;
"Riding Thumb" a duet with Travis Tritt featuring Robert Randolph on pedal steel.

'Overnight Sensational' closes with "You Are So Beautiful" a stirring duet with Sam Moore and Billy Preston, featuring guitar by Eric Clapton and Robert Randolph on pedal steel. Billy Preston plays Hammond organ the first track and sings on the last track of the album, which I guess gives him the last word, doesn't it? This album marks Preston's last recording, and September 2nd would have been Billy Preston's 60th birthday, so let's remember him by playing his music on this day. Call your local radio station and ask them to remember Billy by playing his songs too.

A tour is probably in the works, which would take place in Europe first, and then the US. If that lineup is anything like the guest artist roll call on this album, then that's going to be one helluva band!

In closing, Sam Moore had nothing but praise for producer Randy Jackson and had this to say about the album..."If ya like it, play it, buy it. If ya don't, that's ok. We attempted to do the best we could. I just hope you know that that's not all!"

Check out Dave at Classic Rock for another good interview with Sam Moore!

This album is now available in CybersMusicStore.
