Setup is simple...install iTunes from the included CD, plug in the USB cable, and Apple does the rest. If you already have a bunch of tunes on your computer, the iTunes setup finds it, and even organizes it into folders by artist and album, if you tell it to in the setup wizard. Or you can just rip your CD collection into the iTunes library and build your own playlists.
But the best feature is the size. I'm talking one gigabyte of storage that's smaller than a pack of cigarettes. That's about 240 songs, according to Apple's website. The iPod also displays album artwork and stores photos. It can even play podcasts and audiobooks, or synchronize calendars, contacts or to-do lists.
The click wheel interface is so intuitive, I didn't even need instructions. It's really sensitive, but you quickly get used to it's touch, and there's a hold button to lock it down, so you're not changing songs or voume when you're carrying it around. The color display screen is also easy to read, and you can access a calendar, world clock and even games.
The coolest thing about owning an iPod is walking around anywhere with my favorite songs playing in my head. I was outside watching a thunderstorm while listening to Hendrix this past weekend...the sense of freedom is awesome! The sound quality is great with the included ear buds; no more bulky headphones. Stereo never sounded so good, and you'll be discovering new sounds in your old CD's.
Of course, headphone wires sometimes just get in the way, but today there's an entire line of cool sound accessories, like the speaker dock that plays through tiny speakers with pretty big sound. My favorite is the car adapter, which plays either through an FM signal, or through a direct cable input. The sheer number of available accessories is just staggering.
Being the music junkie that I am, I've already maxed out the 1GB of memory in the nano, and I'm already hooked on this technology. But it's easy to manage your playlists and rotate your music whenever you like.
I guess this makes me a member of the Church of the iPod
Now I've got a new soundtrack for my life. Thanks, Sammie!
